V. C Coo, ono of tho promoters, says
that the stte chosen Is on land of
Tho Bend Company above town and
near tho river. Tho building plan
that is under consideration follows
closely tho plan of tho state Institu
tion for tho trcatmen of tuberculosis
patients at North Reading, Mass.
Specifications arc being prepared for
this building nt tho present time
and when they are completed and the
other details arranged contracts will
be let.
As Indicated In the building plans,
tho sanatorium will bo Intended for
tuberculosis sufferers, and It is ex
pected that It will open with its full
capacity of patients, 20 In all. Tho
building will bo on tho so-called butter-fly
plan, with a central portion
for administration purpose and two
wings running from It at obtuso an
gles for tho accommodation of pa
tients. Theso wings will bo open
on tho sunny sides and In the rear
of each will bo rooms correspond
ing to tho number of bed for tho
mo of patients on days when tho
weather Is too cold for them to re
main In tho open portion. A separate
building will contain kitchen and
dining room and nurses' quarters.
Speaking of the sanatorium. Dr.
Coo said:
"For six years I have been watch
ing tho statistics of deaths as re
ported by the state board of health
and I have observed hat Crook
County shows tbe lowest death rato
from tuberculosis of any county In
tho state, only 4 or 6 per cent of all
deaths in the county being from
that cause. Malheur comes next
with about G per cent, while in Clack
amas It 1b about 19 per cent. Of the
Crook county deaths, it should be
noted that many of them are of what
might be called imported cases; that
Is, low cases originate here. For some
time I have been trying to start a
sanatorium here to tako advantage
of these favorable conditions and
success Is beginning to come. We
are going to have tho best Institu
tion of Its kind in the Northwest. "

PKINEVILLE, Feb. 9. Arrange
ment for the farmers' short course
are fast noaring completion. Classes
will begin at 8 o'clock on the morn
ing of February 23 and will be held
in the Commercial Club hnli, at the
court house and In some of the class
rooms at tbe high school, In order to
accommodate all who wish to attend.
Tho work In agriculture will deal
with all the phases of the subject at
interest to the farmers of the coun
ty. Tbe lectures and demonstrations
indomestic science will all bo of a
practical nature. Under agronomy,
will be studied such subjects as: '
Crook county soils, their fertility '
and management, tho crops adapted
to each type of soil; the production
and disposal of these crops, as well
as other phases of this Interesting
branch of scientific agriculture which
clou Is with soils and crops. This
work will be given by Prof. H. D.
Scuddor of the department of agron
omy at tbe O. A. C.
Lectures on the various breeds of
beef and dairy cattle, light and heavy
horses, sheep and swine, will bo giv
en by Prof. Potter. He will also give
lectures on tbe breeding, foedlng and
management of tho various classes
of livestock. Practice In scoring and
Judging will be given. Each part of
the animal will bo studied so that tho
farmer will learn to look at the ani
mal aB a collection of parts, each 'of
which should conform to a certain
standard.

nt O. A. C, will deliver, the lectures
on dairying, discussing such topics
ns the establishment, care and feed
ing of a dairy herd, milk and cream
testing, co-oporatlvo,, testing, the
making of butter and cheese, etc. Tho
utudents will be given practice in
testing milk and cream. Thoso wish
ing to take part In this work should
bring samples of milk and eu-ain
from their own cows.
The domestic science work will be
conducted by Dean Calvin, assisted
by Mrs. Dolman of Corvnllls and Mrs.
"Wulker of tho Crook County High
School. It will cover plain, fancy
and special cookery, home nursing,
house sanitation, etc.
