C.. Dec 30. Thousands of ncroa of Innd lying Idle ns Buminor fallow each year In Bast cm Oregon ore well adapted to tho growing of beans, Btntes Farmer's Mulletln No. 661, Issued by tho Do partment of Agriculture. Fifteen years' experience shows thnt as good cereal crops can bo grown following benns as after an ordinary summer fallow. Tho cultivation of tho beau crop roplnces tho work necessary to caro for tho fallow, and leaves tho eoII In excellent condition for seeding 'winter wheat. Tho crop Is also har vested In amplo tlmo to permit early fall seeding. Deans do not seriously competo with wheat for labor, and tho two crops can be grown with practically tho samo equipment. Approximate ly 150 worth of extra machinery Is needed to plant, harvest, and culti vate from 70 to SO acres of beana In stead of cultivating tho land as sum mer fallow. With tho present wage for man and horse labor It requires about J 6 more per aero to grow, har dest, and market a crop of beans than It docs to summer-fallow an equal area. Slnco beans yield on tho ar erago about 800 pounds per acre and Bell for 3 cents per pound, the gross returns per acre Is approximately $24. In districts adapted, to bean culture, beans aro therefore approxi mately $18 per acre more profitable than Bummer fallow. Generally speaking, the soils of the bean-growtng districts are rich In all the mineral elements necessary for plant growth. Under such con ditions tho maintenance of soil fer tility will depend almost entirely on keeping up the organic matter of the soil. This Is not easily accomplished when beans and cereal crops are grown exclusively. Stubblo should always be plowed under Instead of being burned. The plowing under of partially decayed bean and wheat straw will also do much toward keep ing the soil in a productive condition. Tho decayed straw should be scatter ed rather thinly over tho grain stub ble In tho fall. It should be thor oughly worked Into the surfaco of the soil with a shnrp disc harrow and plowed under as soon as polble af ter the first autumn rains. The disk ing causes the straw to mix thorough ly with the soil at the time of plowing instead of forming a layer in the bot tom of the furrow. The arabl land of Eastern Oregon has been devoted almcwt exclusively to the nroductlon of wheat, oats and barley for moro than 30 years. He causo of the introduction of serious weed posts soon after tho land was brought Into cultivation It was found unprofitable to grow a crop of grain each year. Many of the new settlers had come from the Willamette valley where wheat and oats were grown by summer-fallowing the land every sec ond or third year. Hence, they nat urally turned to this system of farm ing as a solution of their weed prob lem, and the growing of small grain bjr tho summer-fallow method Is still the general practice among tho far mers of this region. Under this sys tem of farming from one-third to one half of the land lies Idle each season. MA1WKT HXPOKT. NOItTH PORTLAND. Dec. 27. llccolpts for tho week hnvo been: JIUUO Hl(, CillYCS U.
