fjnow Bannera of tht World' Mett lm
preulv Mountain.
Travelers declare tlint Mount Shasta
is (ho most Unprci-Hvo mountain In tho
world for It stands solitary nml nlone.
Unlike Pikes cnk nml many other of
the world's great mountain. It Is not
surrounded by n number of leaser ones,
and Its tremendous height 14,140 feet
ln appreciated by tho eye.
It la sublimely grand nnd yet grace
fully benutlful. Apitnst the blue of n
California sky Its curved outlines seem
to sweep In the perfect segments of u
cirelo from tho ncs of tbo couo to the
borlton.
Far up on Its bnso the dark green or
the timber line Is mot by the virgin
whiteness of Shasta's snow, nnd then
on, up ond up, fur past the summer
clouds, points the nlnbnster pyramid.
Shnstn Is nn extinct volcano nnd ha
two large glaciers. The Whitney gla'
clcr Is vhdhlc from the railroad. It
looks like n narrow streak of snow, but
It Is over a mile In. width nnd Is seam
ed with great Assures nud crevasses.
At times n natural banner Is unfurled
from Shasta" peak. This Is called tho
"suow banner of Shasta." It only oc
curs when the gale attacks the summit
nnd blows the snow In great gmts
"streaming ngalnst tho sky," ns tho
railroad book has It The banner Is
ween most frequently In November.

QUAINT WILLS.

A Parrot and a ftutitt Cob That Wera
Well Provided For.
The making of queer wills Is a sub
ject prolific of good stories, nnd sdrae
remarkable examples nro given by Vir
gil M. Harris in "Ancient, Curious nnd
Fatuous Wills." One Caroline Hunter,
an elderly spinster, left 1.000 In trust
for her parrot. The money was to pro
vide It with a homo and to guarautco It
attention at the bands of a custodian,
who had to bo of the female sex and
had to undertake cot to leavo England.
The will Included this clause:
"1 will and desire that whoever tries
to frustrate these my intentions shall
forfeit whatever 1 have left him, her
or them. 1 owe nothing to any one.
Many owe me gratitude and money,
but none have paid me either."
A rustic of Toulouse about 1TS1 wrote
a brief will In these terms:
"I declare that I appoint my russet
rob my universal heir, nnd 1 desire that
he may belong to my nephew, George."
This was contested, but was con
firmed, aa it was clear thnt the said
George In owning tho horse would

Ths Marching 8ong.
Nn one knows tbe Inspiration of n
tramping song better than the soldier,
and most regiments have their favor
ite airs, which they lore to yell when
on march. The men of the Manches
ter regiment have a flue reputation
for singing on the march, nnd two of
their favorite songs are MKlllnloe"and
"Brian Horn." both of which give op
portunity for some hearty shouts at
intervals, Similarly the Yorkshires,
when route marching, enliven tbe way
with "Dan Tucker," a song In which
tbe words are of no account nnd the
tune n series of diabolical yells. Lon
