Secretary of tho Interior Lano took advantage of tho presence of tho DIackfeet Indians In New York, where they camo to attend the Travel and Vacation show as guesta of Louts W. I1III, chairman of tho Board of Directors of Great Northern Railway. Ho sent Mr. O'Hara on to New York, from Washington, to begin his labori ous task with theso Indiana. During tho stay of tho red men in New York, Mr. O'Hara bad them sing into phonographs and tho records will be sent on to Washington to bo put In the government archives, therefore preserving for all timo tho music of the original Americans, who arc rap idly passing to tho Happy Hunting Ground. The accompanying picture shows the Indians Dinging to tha phonographs under tho direction of Mr. O'Hara. The Indians could hardly grasp tho idea at first of how they could sing into a tin horn and thereby record their music After tho first song had ""in sung, howovir, tho reproduction na given them In a few minutes and tho magic of tho operation was be wildering to them. They thought it was the most wonderful of all tho wonders they havo seen, slnco their Invasion of Greater New York. Mr. O'Hara had them sing dally to his phonograph, whilo tho Indiana wero in New York and ho is arranging to visit Glacier National Parle early this summer and complete his records of tho DIackfeet tribe there. Through tho Interior Department arrangements wero mado to take theso records privately in an out of tho way loft, second floor of 61 West 37th Street Mr. O'Hara Is a tenor singer and writer of songs of somo note. Several of bis musical friends prominent In tho musical world In New York City and are very much Interested with him. in tho rhythm of tho Glacier Park Indiana' lovo songs. Thero Is ono song In particular which the Glacier Park In dians sing, in which theso musical critics find considerable merit This is a song descriptlva of tho Ulackfcot Indiana' lovo of his homo environ ment This Is a song which thoy al ways havo sung when they left tho shadowa of tho Rocky Mountains and rodo far over the prairies cither on hunting expeditions or to fight tho Sioux. Dig Top, tho Indiana' inter preter, says, "His people always sing this song because when thoy go away from tho mountains their hearts aro lonely and it makes thorn think of "Home, Sweet Homo" Mr. Louis W. Hill, chairman of the Board of Direc tors of the Great Northern Railway, who has dono much for tho Indians of tho West In an educational way, both In agrlculturo and travel, Is very much Interested In Mr. O'Hara's work and has arranged to accompany him personally on his visit to tho Glacier National Park reservation In Montana during tho early summer.
