of road In Iowa existed for yean In
Hcnton county. Just h cross the Cedar
river north of Vinton. It whs knowu
the "jrrnde road" and In well known,
especially to every uutomobllo tourist
who wb unfortunate enough to be
forced to travel It
The pro do road proper In about two
tulles In length, leading directly from
the north end of the Cedar rirer bridge.
It traverses Very lowland, which over
flown In time of high water and pre
scnta a number of difficulties which un
der the old system baffled the roadmafc
era. This crude la built up like a rail
road prade. and the height Tarlcs from
probably ten to twenty- feet During
freshets the rtrcr wonld cover the en
tire country, tn soma places running
over the road, and the consequence was
that when the waters receded the grade
wan honeycombed with washouts. Va
rious ways were tried to reslt the
water, such an uslnj? crushed stone,
dirt, etc but every year found the sur
face of the road a little worxe than the
year before and so hill of "chuck"
bole that a real old corduroy road was
a boulevard In comparison. It was al
most Impossible to get over It with a
load, much less an automobile.
As the ordinary road tax In this
township wns entirety too small to
properly take care of even thin one
piece of road, the building of a per
manent highway was a dllQrnlt. mat
ter. However, early last spring; the
Vinton Ad. club took the mutter up,
and what wan the wurst piece of road
In Iowa Is now the brat and enjoys
the distinction of being the first con
crete county road to be built In Iowa.

contractor at $1.03 per square yard,

upon and better still to travel over.

amounts to 2.000 lineal feet. The road
way is sixteen feet wide, wltb center
