North Canal daiu, some "6 men being
miiloyed there now. Tho construc
tion of tho Mb project Is now In
chargo of the Central Oregon Irriga
tion Co. officials. L. P. derdetx hav
ing given up tho contract last Fr'day
noon.
Construction has been considerably
delayed on tho dam and canal, by
unforeseen obstacles, but thoso In
charge of tho work say that they ex
pect to complete It for uso by Janu
ary 1st.
Tho biggest lart of tho most dim
cult features of tho work havo been
completed. The huge dam across
the stream yet requires some con
crete and other work. On tho canal
Itself most of the concrete lining Is
In where excavation has lx?eu made.
Just now men are blasting through
the rock to connect tho canal with
the headgale. the only canal excava
tion remaining, which will be com
pleted by Nov. 15. The concroto
work at the hcadgato Is In.
A pool or head bay Is being built
just below the dam. on the east side,
through which will pass the water

Work ou thla project was started
In April and It was expected to have
It completed by September 1. llow
over. various obstacles not calculated
tn at flrst came up. With the ex
ception or tho finishing touches, the
undertaking will be completed this
winter. Next spring water will I

county brought under irrigation.

The present week is "moving
woek" for many llend olllco men, for
the rapidly approaching completion
of tho several new office buildings.
Tenants are going In upstairs at the
new First National Hank building
and In the Sather building. Ilefore
tho end of the month the bank Itself
will move.
The IT. a. Forestry office Is now
moving Into Its quarters on the sec
ond floor of the bank building. V.
A. Forbes. M. S. Lattln and Ward II.
Coble aro In their office suite there,
moving from their respective former
places of business. J. C. Rhodes,
local manager of the Dond Park Com
pany, also has moved Into the bank
building. Dr. Coe expects to move
during tho week. Hunter & Staats
Sather building, where Dr. F. H.
Thompson now has his office also.

Mr. Nellie Wright MuyM New Hotel

Mrs. Nellie Wright, owner of the
Hotel Wright and the Star Restau
rant, last week bought the New Hotel
Taggart of A. C. Lucas.
With the acquisition of this, Mrs.
Wright has a hostelry of 28 rooms
with hot and cold water and 10 with
out but otherwise modern, with elec
tric lights, etc.
The stone block owned by D. A.
Itoyd and Marley b. Simpson Is occu
pied. Where the Star dlolngroom
was will be the hotel office and lobby;
the New Taggart dlolngroom will be
the new dlolngroom, and the New
ITaggart .offloo will be a sainpleroom.
A door 'has 'been made through the
wall connecting the two buildings on
the ground floor. There was one
already on the second. The flrst
meal In the new dlnlngroom will be
erved tonight, this being tho Knights
of Pythias banquet at 11:30. Mrs.
Wright will continue her family
meals, serving In addition meals for
the trausleut public.

The masquerade ball given under
the auspices of the Royal Neighbors
Jodge on Hallowe'en was well at
tended, and sorao elaborate and
unique costumes were worn. The
floor In tho new Sather building was
" In flrst class condition and the danc
ers had an enjoyable evening, This
was the first affair In tho new stone
edifice.
Seven prlues were awarded for
-unique or original' costumes. The
. first prlue was captured by Miss
Kdltu Thompson. She wore a tissue
costume trimmed with black cat and
pumpkin figures.

At The Dalles Inst Friday morning
at 11 o'clock Miss Mabol Leonhardt
of Lowell, North' Carolina, and Ural
N. Hoffman of Hcnd were married by
Kov. M. J. Perdue, nt tho Methodist
parsonage. Tho hrldo arrived at Tho
Dalles Thursday evening, being met
by Mr. Hoffmann Tho nowlyweds
came here Friday evening and aro
staying at tho Altamont Hotel. As
soon as sotno changes nro tnado In
tho rooms, they will be at home on
the second floor of the old First Nat-
tonal Hank building.
I.ool friends of the groom wero
given a complete surprise, as Mr.
Hofrman kept his secret. Mr. and
Mrs. Hoffman expected to go to Port
land on a short honeymoon trip, but
postponed It owing to tho long Jour
ney across the continent by the hrldo.

Hoffman became acquainted with
Miss Kconhardt. He came to Ta
coma. Wash., In March, 1909. and to
Hcnd In December, 1910, and since
April, 1911, has been managing

telegraphic national election returns
wero received. Carmody llrothcrs
and the Star Theatre handled tho re
turns exclusively. The Ilulletlu also
receiving tho full reports. They
havo continued to come In all day
today, and tonight the final detailed
reports doubtlesa will bo received.
Tonight at the Star tha returns
will -Again be announced between
reels. A further attraction will bo
the fonr special reels. The regular
ten and fifteen cent prices will hold,
and. If the returns keep coining In,
three shows will be held. As tho
final returns from the state, as wejl
as national returns, aro expected to
he In by tonight. It Is Iwllcvcd that
many people will avail themselves of
tho opportunity to enjoy the pictures
and the returns together.
