Smith, president of tho Library Club

efficiency in tho civic life of the city
today is duo to the untiring work of
Its president- Vhcn Mrs. Smith
was chosen to fill that position, the
club was small In membership, with
enthusiasm oven at a lower ebb.

hard work, Mrs. Smith kept the club

presidency, tho club did not even
havo a secretary or treasurer and all
the official duties devolved on the

the purpose of raisins funds, was a
part of the presidential duties.
Club'a Financial Standing.
A statement of the finances ot the
club, aa prepared by tho secretary-
treasurer, Mrs. P. V. Drown, shows
that the club Is now on a thriving
basis. The club owns the library
building, which cost $456. Of this
amount J 60.85 waa donated In ma
terial. The building Itself was given
by the Deschutes Investment Com
pany, and J. W. Dlralck, L. C. Flem
ing, George Drosterhous and H. D.
Oourcy contributed labor. The ma
terial was donated as follows: Uend
Company, $50; Skuso Hardware Com
pany, $6.35! Ovcrturf-Davls-Mlller
Company. $4.50
The club has on hand $70.15 In
cash. There was a balance from
August of $97.90, and during the
month the receipts have been $18.30.
The September expenditures have
been $46.05, this including librarian's
salary, printing, wiring of building,
new books, etc The club has $25
In bills receivable.
The Indebtedness of the club is
$257.55, this amount being due the
First National Rank, which charges
no Interest on the .Joan. Of this
amount $170 is for having the library
building moved from the corner of
Bond and Oregon streets to Its
present site, and $87.65 for cash ad
vanced for labor.
Hooks Now Number 7SO.
In addition to tho building, the
club owns more than 750 volumes,
some fixtures, dishes and flat sllvor
sufficient for use on almost any oc
caalon. Tho library subscribes for
36 periodicals, making It the best
reading room to be found In Central
Oregon.
All the ladles of the club take great
interest In its work and devote much
of their time and energies to It, and
along with Mrs, Smith tboy all de
fecrvo much credit for fostering such
an Important asset of the town.
