Stored potatoes lose dirt and shrink about 10 to 15 per cent of their total weight In about ilx months. Potatoes, or course, cannot be held for any great length or time. They cannot be stored long In tho South and they cannot be held na welt west or the Cascades aa here, particularly alnce the recent rains west or the moun tains. It Is a good plan 1 mil.UINO KOADS. (Hums Tlmes-Ilorald) Judgo Kills or Crook county made a good practical talk at tho recent Development League meeting at lakevlew on permanent road build lug that should be given attention. Ilu explained what a ehango waa made In hla county with tho coming or tho railroads nnd that much work or recent years had been wasted from not observing tho practical sldo or the situation. Crook county sient j many thousands or dollars on roads that aro not used to uny extent today alnco the railroads have come. He suggested thnt all permanent roads should be built leading toward the new railroad lines now lolng con structed Into Central Oregon. It doesn't necessarily follow that main highways bo neglected, but kept In repair, as they will always Ik used more or less, especially throughout the settled and fnrmlng sections, but the main avenues loading to estab lished places on tho line ot railroad ahould bo glren consideration, aa thoso are the roads that aro going to bo used most In tho nenr futuro and will bo permanent highways. This suggestion Is one that ahould bo followed In this county. Wo are -going to change the order or things noxt year when tho railroads reach us and we should propare for this ehango and place tho road funds to tho best advantage. to leave them In tho foil as long as can be safely done without danger or (rcexlug or hoavy rains. In the larger fields, tho potato harvester can bo used to good advantage whero reasonably freo from stone. The four-bonm digger Is a good type for large fields, Whero sovsral acres are to be dug, a shaker digger with two- wheel forecarrlage Is luexponilve aud fairly good. Thorough harrowing and close picking Is Important to avoid volunteering later. The potatoea ahould lie on the ground surface a few hours or until they become thoroughly dry on the surface drying aids removal or dirt from potatoes. They should bo graded In tho field. The potatoes nro picked up aud placed In tho hop per or the grader. They pass down on an Incline over some two and one hair or three feet of screen with a two to two and one-half mesh. The culls which drop then can be caught in a sack and the main grade can ha caught in a sack or crated at the lower edge. A fow or the overgrown potatoes are laid aside for a baking srado, .. Potatoes will probably be handled cate a market. An association store- house near the shipping olnt wilt be a groat advantage. Such an or-1 ganlzatlou can purchase a power spray and diggers and other machln-j ery too expensive for tho small grower to afford. Through such an organization, tho market demands j can be better learned nud the section ' led to produce what the consumer ' wants. Commercial potato growers , In any community should confine themselves to ono or two leading varieties. In Central Oregon, wo be lieve the Hural New Yorker may gain first place over the Hurbank as a commercial potato, but It will take a couple of years to change seed to another variety, even with organized effort. Commission houses may be round In any largo center but It is often necessary Jo have a man on the ground to find a reliable house and to learn tbo market demands. Names of Potato Dealers. Manager Drown of the Commercial Club has on file a list or the names or potato dealers or the Northwest and Middle West which he will be glad to show any farmer who may desire to see it. In building with nil other material no allowance is made for doors, windows and other, openings. With briek you can make an allowence of 10 to 25 percent. With lumber 15 to '25 percent is added for sizing, laps, etc. With briek it is unnecessary. With all other 'material 5 to 10 per cent added for waste, such as cutting, fitting, knots, shakes, etc. With 'brick there is absolutely no waste. When a building is finished, built with any other muterial, there is always a lot of Waste to haul away.
