Htate Make Trip to Land.
Central Oregon has been chosen by
' the Hebrew Agricultural Association
of Oregon, with headquarter at Port
land, as the field for localfng a
colony. ThU decision was reached
after a thorough search had been
made of the Pacific Northwest States.
Some time ago several ot the men
interested made a trip through the
homestead country about CO miles
from Bend, but It was found that it
was not suitable. The president and
secretary of the association, A.
Zldell and David N. Mosessobn, then
took the matter up with K. It. Post
and O. C. Henkle, putting them In
fujl charge to selWt land enough on
which to locate a colony of their pro
portions An extended trip through
Crook, Lake and Harney counties was
made by them in company with four
representatives of the association.
After the return from the trip, the
locators were notified to got every-
thing in readiness for settlement of
the land.
Messrs, Post and Henkle made a
careful survey of the lands, bringing
back samples of the soil and Its pro
ducts and many pictures. Monday
afternoon they left with 13 people,
making the first actual settlement of
the lands. t
Tho association that Is back of the
colony was organized In Portland
July 1. Its objoct is to encourage
agriculture among tho Jews by means
or loans. without interest and other
asslatanco. Many or tho most promi
nent Jews or the Oregon metropolis
have jbecome jnenipers and are sup
' porting 'it wjth time and money.' .

tho first-class rnllruait lino which tho
Oregtin Short Line. Is IIIiirIiik West

and Harrlmaii enterprise. Tho In-
formation received hero emanates
from Eastern financial Interests
closely allied with the two great sys
tems Indicating that the sltlows or
war for constructing this .lOO-mlto
lino from the Idaho border to n
Junction with tho Hill and llnrrliuaii
roads at llenil nro being supplied
partly by the Hill financial group and
partly by the Harriman backers In
Wall street.
Thero Is no prelonto of conceal
ment or tho fact that the Harrlmaii
puriHiso Is to make this lino tho
double track or Its main linn from
Portland to the East, and that as
soon as tho present extohslon of 140
miles from Vale on the Short Line, to
Dog Mountain, 20 miles south of
tlurns, has been completed, contracts
will bo let for the construction of the
remaining 160 miles from Dog Moun
tain to llotul. This will give the
Harriman system a completed double
track line from Portland to Omaha,
as the double tracking of the system
lover that entire dlstsnce has been
progressing for nearly two yosrs,
and Is to lie completed by 1915.
Tho Immedlato advantage to be
gained by the Hill forces by entering
Into another "gentlemen's agree
ment" with their ancient rival Is to
give them access Into Southeaiitcru
Oregon In the first place, a territory
In which the different Hill magnates
have been spending great sums In ex
ploitation work. Of course, tilt I -
mstcly, the connecting link from
llond, the present southern terminus
of the Oregon Trunk, to tho Idaho
boundary, will open another enor
mously rich country In the Gem
State.
Tho Hill people, with a linn al
ready extending Into the Camas
Pralrlo as far as Grangevllle, have re
cently let a contract for the con
struction of an extension of 100 miles
south from Grangevllle to a connec
tion with New Meadows, on the
Pacific & Idaho Northern, which tups
the rich west central portion of
Idaho. Tho Hill lino from Grauge
. vlllo south would tap an enormous
' agricultural section as well as a fine
I timber and mining belt In the Salmon
Hirer district.
Thoro have been rumors that the
Harriman and Hill forces wero to
Join hands In pushing a lino east and
west across Oregon ever since tho
Hills sold to tho Harriman system
I all Its rights In the Ilolio & Western

Colonel C. E. S. Wood was fathering
for James J. Hill, and embraced sur

Before You Let the Contract
for that new building, consider these
fuels ubout brick.
In building with all other material no
allowance is made for doors, windows and
other openings.
With brick you can make an allowence
of 10 to 25 percent.
With lumber 15 to 25 percent is added
for sizing, laps, etc. With brick it is
unnecessary.
With all other material 5 to 10 per
cent added for waste, such as cutting,
fitting, knots, shakes, etc. With brick
there is absolutely no waste.
When a building is finished, built with
any other material, there is always a lot
of waste to haul away.
With brick, if you have any left ,wc
will take them ofl your hands at the full
price you paid for them.
There is a hundred other reusons why
ypu should build with brick.
