AN OPPORTUNITY.
Tfio action of tho four county
courts In eontilbutlng county funds
for tho maintenance of tho Central
Oregon Development Leaguo work Is
admirable. That four sparsely set
tled counties should do this sots a
mark for enterprise that well may be
a lesson to tho rest of the state. Tho
funds so raised, amounting to $4,000,
can accomplish much good. ,It Is
essential that they bo used wisely and
well. A year of misuse and the ad
inlrabto now scheme will bo dead.
To bo used wisely means that the
energies these funds maintain should
bo dlrected.to the agricultural better
ment of the country first, and second
ly to Its exploitation. It Is more
Important to help those who already
aro here than It Is to bring more
cttlerj. I.ot the league workers
carry tho message of tho farmer
scientists to the ranchers and the
homesteaders of these counties. Let
every aid be given the man ot small
moans and small knowledge who be
comes a Central Oregon settler. Let
the leagiio be a right hand to the
agricultural college and tho demon
stration stations. Also, let It collect
exhibits and le,t it tell tho world, and
how the world, why peoplo should
co mo to Central Oregon and how
they can prosper hero; only let this
mission be secondary. If the league
does this. It will succeed and tho tax
payers' monoy wTll be well spent.
If It becomes publicity mad, t6 the
detriment of tho broader and far
more valuable work It can and
bould do. Inevitably It will meet
popular hostility, Instead-of popular
support. Taxpayers have a direct
financial Interest now. Theisalarled
league workers bare ajfdlrect re-'
ponslblllty to the taxpayers. The
Istter will insist upon labor and upon
results.
An Interesting little Indication ot
where Tho Dultettn finds Its way, and
the work It Is doing towards bringing
jcople here, U'thnt during the last
veck two more bluejackets on Uncle
Barn's battleships have been added
to the list of subscribers. Both
these sailors heard about Dond; they
wrote for sample copies of the paper;
then they subscribed. When their
terms of service expire they will
quit the sea and come hore.
Nearly one hundred Interested ex
cursionists will bo here Sunday and
Monday, corning from the three lead
ing cities of the Northwest. Every
one of them Is making the long trip
to see Dend. Everyone' here wants
the town to appear at Its best. A
little cleaning up will work wonders
In this direction.
NOT A DOUBLE WEDDING.
A letter from V. R. Wilkinson
states that the report that Wlllard
Hoution and Mba Maggie Aune wero
man led at the same time Miss Caro
line and Mr. Wilkinson were, Is
erroneous. She in visiting with Mr.
and Mrs. Wilkinson and will rettfiu
to Rend In a few weeks. Mr. Wilkin
bon Is uuw president and general
manager of the Fandango Lumber
Co.. having risen from foreman since
goiug there from Dend last year.
