who made a kick becauso his taxes
were too low? There are some
people at Redmond, It seems, who
tske things this way. according to
the Spokesman. This grievance Is
that tho county assessor and tho
board of equalization haro made it
appear thai Redmond has mado no
progress In real estate valuation dur
ing tho past two years. Tho Spokes
man says:
"Last year a fair valuation was
placed on Redmond property and im
provements by the people here, but
the assessor's otnee cut the valuation
in half, and then the county court
took a whack at the assessor's fig
ures and cut them down so that the
city's valuation was mado to look
like a cross roads hamlet
"This year tho samo thing has
been dono done, and the valuation
ehows that Redmond has Incressed
only In valustion about $7,000, when

Interstate Commorco Commission
giving this town better rntca to tho
East than Eastern Oregon towns
have.
By tho decision ot tho commission,
maximum rates will bo patd by
points along tho Eastern border of
Oregon, Including Vale and Ontario,
tho rates diminishing east and west
ot that lino as necessitated by dis
tance on ono aldo and water compe
tition on tho other.
Tho commission finds that this Is
ono instance where tho short and
long haul clauso can properly bo
waived, because ot tho fact that wa
ter competition actually exists and
cannot bo overlooked.
This means that Harney county
wool growers who have bsen ship
ping their product from Vale can now
send It from Bond, enjoying not only
tho reduced freight charges from
their ranches to Bend but from this
point to the Eastern market.

This, together with tho fact that
Bend has been mado a concentration
point by the railroads, will eventual
ly mako this a great wool-marketing
center. By being a concentra
tion point. Bend becomes tho selling
place for wool delivered to tho rail
roads at towns north ot hero. The
local charges from thoso points to
this terminal will bo absorbed by tho
roads when the shipments aro sent
East. Tho United Warehouso Co.
Is prepared to mako liberal advances
to wool growers, and thla too will
bo a strong Incentlvo to them. Tho
wool business will be handled for tho
company by W. II. Bontloy, who Is
tho only thoroughly experienced man
along tho Oregon Trunk-Dcschutcs
line In this business. With tho
Moody company at Shanlko, he be
camo entirely familiar with wool.
A definite wool sales date for Bend
has not been set, but It will likely bo
in July.
