"It Is marc blessed to Blvo than
to receive."
So salth tho Iltbllcal wlso man.
That holds good today, especially as
rceards adrlce It's a durn sight
easier to gtvo It than It Is to take It
NcYsrthclesa, here roes a few ran
dom TuBSesTlons. action upon which
Btl8ht help Dend.
A WATERING TROUGH.; Why
sot? Uoncfeols one. and needs it
badly. Kreryono would benefit,
especially farmer who come U to
purchase supplies and are obliged
either to Icavo their horses standing
dry or pack water to them In a
bucket from somo charitable per
son's tap. A splendid placo for one
a small, handsomo trough built with
Dond rock Is In front of tho post
office. It would cost a few dollars;
tho city might do far worso than
erect two. In different parts of town.
A PUIILIC HITCHING PLACE.
"Why not? Just at present, with tho
exception of limited accommodation
In front of stores, there aro few if
any places where farmers and others
can leave their horses tied. Again,
this would be a great convenience to
everyone, and tho expenso Is almost
negligible. A few such llttlo atten
tions to out-of-town peoplo and they
would feel far mora warmly wel
comed hero than they do now.
FOURTH OF JULY. Are wo go
int to have a celebration? Last
jcar Rend was as quiet as tho gravo.
If tho town Intonda to have tho
4ang-np good tlmo It should have, it
Is none too soon to start tho ball
rolling.
HASKHALL.
:jond should havo a good baseball
team this season. That does not
necessarily moan that tho local team
need win all Its games, or even most
of them, though such success la
greatly to lie desired. It does mean
fcowerer. that Uond should bo ropro
ucated by a team of which It may be
jiroud.
With tho railroad making visits
from other teams a simple and com
paratively Inexpensive matter, there
Is every opportunity to arrange a
Very diversified schedule, which
readily may Include contest with
Portland and other "outsido" nines.
Ry combining with towns along the
line, w that a Portland team, for
Instsncc. could play both hero and
at Redmond and Metollus, every
place could get the fun of flrst clasa
Karnes, and the expenses could bo
kept down admirably.
All the other Interior towns have
teams organized and are practicing.
Jt Is time that Houd gets busy.
And this year why not try to get
along without imported players, and
be content with real Rend men?
It's a whole lot hotter to bo beaten
.-with a team of fellows who belong
lere and play for tho fun of It, than
to win with a team of outsiders who
nro induced to stay here for n few
months In one way or another. And
there havo been instances within tho
memory of the youngest Inhabitant
where, even with a lot of imported
alleged talent, victories were mighty
shy.
Although last season was far from
n brilliant success, from tho stand
3olnt of both sport and finances, It
s a safo bet that the people of Rend
will glvo hearty support to a team
that will do Its best.
IilG'IITH AT TUB DKPOT
Electric lights which havo beon
liadly needed at the depot havo been
put In, being turned on last night for
the first time. There are four large
incandescent on tho front side of the
liulldlug, next to tho track, and an
equal number on tho roar side. The
Improvement inakos it very light
around the station.

O. A. C Will IuvrMtlgnto Dry and
Irrigated Farming Possibilities
In Crook County Cooperative
Work to bo Dono Near I lend
CORVALLIS. April 0 Two new
demonstration farms havo Just been
established In Crook county by a
commlttco from tho Oregon Agricul
tural College, composed of Pres. V.
J. Kerf, Prof. H. D. Scuddor and
Regent C L. Hawloy. Ono to bo
devoted to dry-farming experiments,
Is G minutes walk from Motoltus; tho
other, to bo dorotod to Irrigation
farming, Is 10 minutes walk from
Redmond. In both cases farms al
ready In oporatlon were takon over
for tho season, since It was desired
to put evory avallablo dollar of tho
funds secured for tho work Into the
experiments, for which at prcaont
there Is provision for this year only
Careful Investigation of tho possi
bilities of all parts of tho county
was made before tho selection, slnco
conditions thore aro unusual and the
best methods are. In many cases, un
known. After consultation of tho Central
Oregon Development League with
Prof. Scuddor, Pres. Carl R. Gray of
tho Oregon Trunk and tho officials
of the O.-W. R. & N. referred tho
mattor to Pres. Kerr and Dr. James
WIthycomba, directors of tho Ore
gon Experiment Station, and started
a campaign for funds. Tho new
Hill line and tho Harrlman exten
sion each gavo $2,500. tho Crook
County Court added $3000, and the
localities Interested and prlvato citi
zens brought tho total to $10,000,
which was placed In tho hands of the
college experts for tho work.
In Charge of Ktprtn.
Two experts havo been chosen by
tho college to tako charge, Rccauae
of Its great importance, It was de
cided to put tho Irrigation work di
rectly in tho hands of W. L. Powers
of tho college faculty, who Is prob
ably tho best authority on that sub
ject In tho state. Tho dry farming
statton will bo under tho direction
of C. C. Cunningham of Kansas
Stato Agricultural College who has
been agronomist at tho Ft. Hays dry
farming experiment station In west
ern Kansas.
Using tbeso two farms as centers.
cooperative demonstration work will
bo dono throughout tho county.
Every neighborhood will bo reached
and kept In clono touch with tho
stations. The directors will travel
through tho county, Holding private
conferences and public moetings,
and frequent special gatherings will
occur at tho central stations to
study the work dono there. Prof
Scudder. who has probably more de
tailed knowlcdgo of tho county and
Its resources than anyone olse, will
be In supervision.
Throo objects wero kept In mind
In the selection of tho sites: an
average climate, soil and elevation,
to make It as representative as pos
sible of the largest number or farms
In the county; Immodlato accessi
bility to as largo a portion of tho
population as posslblo; and tho se
curing of a farm already partly In
stubblo and partly In crop, equipped
ready for work, with the farmer al
ready on tho ground and willing to
lease the whole for tho year at a
reasonablo price. Slnco there were
funds fpr but one year, there was no
time for clearing new land, and It
was so necessary that tho work
should bo readily Inspected by the
largest number of peoplo possible,
that land otherwlso superior In soil,
climate, or elevation conditions
could not bo used.

S. S. Mohlor of Oregon City has
written to tho Commercial Club that
ho will stock Sparks. Elk. Summit

Mr. Mohlor says there will bo 10

merely for tho benefit of tho sports-'
