Preliminary Steps to Sec What
Can be Done Tnkcn Last Week
Planned to Have System
Connect With 'I his City
Preliminary tew for the con
struction of a telephone line that
will eventually connect with Hend
have been taken by the homestead
ers in Hampton Valley. Atu meet
ing last Wednesday officers were
chiMten and a start made. The set
tlers pledged work and It was de
cided to see what could be done to
ward raising funds for purchase of
the wire and instruments.
It is proposed at first to connect
the home in the valley and later to
extend the line to Hend and to
Harney county, or connect with a
line reaching these points.
Horace Hrookings of Kolynt is in
Hend this week in the interests of
the project and some of the business
men have promised assistance. It
is planned to have the main line
along the Hend-Hurns road, and as
the country settles up will be built
on to Hend. During the winter the
settlers could gel out the poles and
by next spring probably have the
first part of the system constructed.
Hy co-operating with the forestry
service lines, poles can be secured
from the reserve.
The olliccrs elected last week arc:
President, A. S. Fogg; vice presi
dent, II. C. Miller; secretary, Hon
aid Conkling; treasurer, Mr. Ikcler.
The directors are Horace Hrookings,
L. C. I'eck, Iuis Miller. Earl
Rogers, Hurr Hlack, W. P. Ireland
and Pat Stewart.
