"LokrIhk operations in the
vicinity of Bnd will be carrlod on
with tho aid of railroads. We have
found in Louisiana that it is profit
able to haul logs by railroad for
more than 80 milos, and I am in
formed by Frederick Woyerhaoueer

"The sawmills which will cut this
timber will be located at Bond. We
thought at first that wo would bo
able to lotf a groat doal of our
timbor by utilizing tho Doschutoa
Rivor and driving tho logs, but our
oxiMirimonU in driving logs down
this river were not successful, so
we have decided that the most
feasible method of logging is by the
building of railroads. Those rail
roads will be built, irrespective of
whether through linos are oxtonded '
south of Bend."

The introduction of Swedish Rye
is the good work being done by I
Nelson, a. well known rancher who
lives three and a half miles eafet of ,
Rend. Three years ago Mr. Nelson
brouglft eight pounds of the seed
from Sweden, where ho was visiting
his old homo.
Tho first year he planted it he
got 220 pounds, despite the amount

acre near Powell Butte this year,
with excellent results. This fall the
two men will put in 20 acres on
Hahlan's ranch. ,
"The Swedish rye has a much
coarser straw than the other," says '
Mr. Nelson. "The kernol is twice
as heavy, and it stands drought far
bettor than any rye I have seen
tried in this country. Where other
rye goos 25 to -10 bushels, this will
make 35 to 50."
