Recent steps nmong railroad offi
cials, livestock men and those who
have the interest of the state at
heart generally to introduce swine
raising as one of the chief industries
of Oregon are meeting with encour
agement, but D. 0. Lively, manager
of the Union Stockyards, urges
further interest, especially among
the country bankers.
"Some time ago," said Mr.
Lively yesterday, "the company
wrote a number of letters to farm
ers and bankers throughout the
state, suggesting the advisability of
nutting out brood sows in their re
spective localities.
As an evidence of constructive
financiering and breadth of view I
desire to quote from a letter re
ceived from C. S, Hudson, cashier
of the First National Bank at Bend.
He says:
'" 'This country needs hogs. We
don't raise sufficient for home con
sumption. It's a clover and alfalfa
country and I am sure hogs will do
well if properly introduced and
looked after. I want to run a copy
of your letter in our paper here, to
gether with a statement that if our
farmers will get together and re
ceive one or two carloads, this bank
will put up the money and carry
each farmer for one year for the
amount his hogs will come to.'
"If more of the banks would
agree to help their farmer customers
out, as the First National Bank at
Bend otters to do, it would only be
a short time until this ruinous busi
ness policy of sending so much
money out of this state for food
products would be a matter of
history and our people would be in
finitely more prosperous."
