Ettabllttied Crops Look Good
The first picnic ever to be hold in
Hrmpton Valley, the new home
ntead country 75 miles to the south
cast, will be on the Fourth of July.
H. C. Miller, who came to town
Friday to pet a mower and rake,
said that the settlers intend to
make it a gati occasion. One of
the events of the day will bo the
climbing of Hampton Butte.
Mr. Miller reported that the
. upper part of the valley is being
rapidly settled, and a new postotlice
called Hampton, with Adney Fogg
as postmaster, has recently been
opened in the middle of the valley.
A new school district has also been
created, and the children of home
stcaders in that vicinity will be able
to attend school this winter.
Crops in the valley are in good
condition, Mr. Miller said, though
rain has been badly needed. Fall
sown rye is now more than two feet
high, and grain seeded this spring
is growing well.
Mr. Miller's homestead is on the
Bend-Burns road and he has a well
only fifteen feet deep. Accompany
ng him to town were his son, L. E.
Miller, and the I .tter's wife, who
came in to have dental work done.

Timber In National Forests Near Pine
Mountain Burntd.
Forest fires which swept over a
thousand or more acres have been
reported during the past week with
in a radius of thirty or forty miloa
of Bend. Both national roscrvos
and private holdings have been
damaged.
The most destructive blaze wa3
a few miles southeast of Pine
Mountain, in Government timber,
and there was also another in sec
tion 6-21-15, south of Pine Moun
tain, of less severity. In all, about
1000 acres was burned over, much
large and small timber being de
stroyed. Assistant Forest Super
visor Hubert E. Derrick of La Pine
and Supervisor Roy Harvey of Bend
went out from here Thursday and
succeeded in extinguishing the fires,
returning Friday night. They re
ported that there had been several
mailer fires in the vicinity of La
Pine. Lightning is believed to have
set all these fires in national re
serves. Timber owned by several private
parties was also afire last week.
ThU was about sixteen milos south
of Bend, near Spring River. A
force of nine men was sent out
from here and succeeded in ex
tinguishing the (lames without great
damage being done. This fire is
believed to have been started by
campers.
