THE BEND BULLETIN
T '
I.MPHRTINliNT QUUSTION NO. I.
If Bend, with n population of
1000 pays its high school principal
J167.R0 a month, what will the
principal receive when Bend has
5000 population?
11
WAKU UP j
Dunne; the last month Bend has
received more than thirty enthusia
stic "write ups" from papers thro
ughout the state praising the town
lawn contest. But how about the
local people who should be interest
ed in it. 'Most every one is fairly
willing to tell how "things should be
run," but when a splendid oppor
tunity such as this is afforded for
folks to back up a really valuable
competition, made possible through
the generosity of a local organiza
tion, and by so doing add much to
the appearance of the town, it seems
as if interest faded just as soon as
the matter at hand required some
physical exertion.
If six ieople will "get busy" on
new lawns, the Bulletin will add an
other ten dollars to the fifty dollar
prize. Wake up!
Th initial convention of the Cen
tral Oregon Development League
marks a nw. era In the cooj.erative
develoiHtient of the interior coun
try. "Stop knocking and get to
gether" is to be the the slogan hero
after. An excellent example of the
new order of things, the spirit of
help-the-other-fellow, is the sugges
tion of the Bend Commercial Club
that the town3 of south-central Ore
gon give the local development or
ganization supplies of their litera
ture, photographs, etc., these to be
kept on hand here at Bend at the
Commercial Club rooms, so that
homeJBikjrs an 1 others who come to
Bend, if by chance they may not find
what they desire here, will have ev
ery opportunity to become familiar
with the offerings of the towns and
country of the south. That this
territory will reciprocate, making
warmer the friendly relations which
already exUt, U inevitable. And
such cannot but be to great mutual
a J vantage.

II. C. Ellis,
Recorder.
An ordinance that would prevent
bands of heep from passing through
the street of Bond, and through
one of the town's most attractive
residential sections, is an important
action that the city council could
take with universal approval. It is
both entirely unnecessary and wrong
that thousands of sheep should have
an opportunity to destroy practical
ly every bit of green grass lying in
their path through Park Addition,
Injure lawns, raise an unholy amount
of dust and make filthy the side-jprjce
walks at the southern end ot Menu a
principal street.
How many of ua know that be
fore the coming of the white men
the Deschutei Valley v. as called
"Quelah," or "Ihe Beautiful
Valley," and that the place where
Bend now stands to the Indian! was
known as Widgi Creek?
Now that Burns has given such
splendid support to the proposed
Bend-Burns mail route, it is up to
Bend to bestir itself and get even
more signatures on the petition than
did the Harney county town.
