In the posting of notices calling for bids forvnrrylnpr the mnll from Culver to Bend, commencing July 1st and ending nny time between now nnd June 30th, 1916, Uie Post office Department has added another little act to Central Oregon's postal farce. The notice refered to, which just has been placed on view at Bend and other postolllces, describes the service which the bidders are to supply, as follows. l'rom Culver by Illllmati and Red mond to Heiul, 4t tnltea and back, 7 limes a week. Leave Culver daily on receipt of mail from train due at S.J I p. in., but not later than midnight. Arrive nt Bend in 9 hour. Leave llend at 1 p, ni. Arrive at Culver in 9 limits. I Two months and a half after the; Oregon Trunk railroad has insti tuted regular daily service to Mad- j ras, operating first class trains with j mail car attached, the governmental postal institution turns in its sleep ' and issues this call for bids. As a I humorous masterpiece in its class ' it stands preeminent. On July first the Department proposes to start a decent mail service to interior Ore gon. The mere fact that for four months the mails from Uie outer world have come by antiquated stages, over an absurd routing, with a needless delay of more than a day, are matters, it is supposed, which now should be forgotten in the jubilation which follows the an nouncement that at last Bend and the other towns are to have a civil ized mall service July first, per haps. Also it doesn't seem to matter much that the railroad will be completed to Bend shortly after the date of the proposed change. But a pessimist can't help wonder ing how many months it will take the Postoffice Department to make another change, this time from Culver to Bend, after the comple tion of the railroad. However it is not at all improbable that the Cul ver sen-ice never will be started at all, for The Bulletin ventures the guess that no bids will be received for the proposed service. At all , events, mere is notning to be done but to rest in patience, and in the mean time offer up prayers of thanksgiving to that nonexisting d;ety Governmental Efficiency. on .all furniture Millnnl Triplet's 10 The success of the Fourth of July celebrations held at Bend for the last two years indicates how very , "worth while" such affairs can be, , from a business standpoint as well as from that of those who; only interest in the matter is to have a V ! time. Of all the place in the Deschutes Valley Bend by all odds is the best adapted for an attractive celebration of this kind, and cer tainly Bend should take advantage of the opportunity that i3 hers and ' get into the field with a celebration that will pale to insignificance all those that have gone before. The matter is well worth taking up. Without doubt all local business men will give the undertaking hearty support; it is good for the town in every way. CLOUGH Bend, Oregon i Wall Street, Manager Forbes of Uie dend base bill team says that he has received an offer from a first class Portland team to play a series of games here July second to fourth inclusive. What promises to be the best aggre gation of ball tossers ever assembled in Central Oregon is working out on the local diamond, and Bend's pros pect, of having a championship nine were never brighter. A Sunday afternoon or evening fire might prove a very serious affair with many hundred feet of tho city's hose lying along Oregon Street between the hydrant and the ball field. It's a good plan to wet down the diamond, but in justice to every local property owner, the hose ought to be wound up and returned to the hose house after use, and not be left on the street all night.
