(tnrariably In nlwwt.) WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, I9 H 4 If you spend your money in Bend you iret a second chance at the same old. dollar; when that dollar rocs out of town its "Good-bye, Mary LAIDLAW ON DESCHUTES. "Ono thirtff that surprised me was to find that Bend is the only Central Oregon town actually on the Deschutes. Somehow, from adver tising literature I had gained the impression that the towns north were on the banks of the river." The above remarks of Dr. Calvin S. White, were published in last week's Bulletin. Quite naturally complaint is made by Laidlaw, for Laidlaw, seven miles northwest of Bend, Is situated, on the very banks of Central Oregon's great river. What Dr. White meant was that he had encountered no town, in com iiig in from the railroad, situated on the Deschutes. He had supposed that Madras and Redmond were, and was disappointed. Laidlaw was, is. and always will be, on the Des chutes, a growing and flourishing town. An energetic man, knowing the country and having the ability to talk about it, can accomplish a splendid work at Madras, these days, '.there arc hundreds of people get ting of! the trains who haven't any very clear idea of what they want or where they want to go. If told aoout Bend and about the homestead country southeast, best reached via Bend, scores would come here who now go elsewhere. His work would ai J them, in dollars and cents, and aid the town, immeasurably. Would not four-foot sidewalks in the residenta) districts be as service able as six-foot walks? Such could be constructed at considerable less cost, and property owners would be more eager to extend walks, thus adding much to the appearance and convenience of the town and prop erty value. One thousand feet ot four-foot walk would do more good than 800 feet of six-foot walk. The Bulletin would be glad to know why the Harriman Central Oregon road styles itself the "Des Chutes" Railroad Company. Upon all maps, in government reports and documents, and by local and state wide use and acceptance the name of the Central Oregon river from which the new railroad derives its title is spelled "Deschutes." MltJJCAN, Ore., March 7. As sistant Forest Ranger Hubert K. Derrick, with headquarters nt Iji Pine, Oregon, will bo in the vicinity of Pine Mountain as soon as the snow is out of the timber, to confer with homesteaders in regard to free use of material from the forest re serve. Each homesteader near the reserve is entitled to 20 worth of timber from the national forest each year. Under the regulations of the forestry service, all timber must be marked by a forest officer before it is removed, a permit being Issued after such selection. The following are the free use prices in the vicinity of Pine Moun tain: Green yellow pine saw timber per M $2.00 Green yellow pine for fuel, per cord Dead nine- for fuol, per cord.. Green lodgenolo pine saw tim ber per M 1 Green lodgepole pine for house logs, 54 c for linear foot. Green lodgepole pine for fuel, per cord Green lodgepole pine fence post Jreen yellow pine fence posU . Dead yellow pine fence posts . Mr. Derrick writes that all home steaders who wish to secure timber from the Pine Mountain reserve should send him their names, so he con notify them when he will be in this vicinity and meet them all at the same time. A number of set tlers in Millican Valley and Juniper Valley are planning to build log houses, barns and out-houses. The Pine Mountain trees are abundant and of splendid quality. Several roads are already open into the reserve hereabouts, making the timber very accessible. There is still a deep snow in the timber and it may be as late as May before it is gone. 25 .00 .25 .01 .02 .01 It has been suggested that the street committee try to navigaU! the city crossings dry shod, or, better yet, take soundings and chart the splendid logging pond at the south end of Wall Street.
