A word about the first school of Bend, and the rapid growth and development of our public schools may be of in terest. Twenty-five years ago the first school in this locality was established in a small log school house, which is still stand ing near the Deschutes river, about midway between the old towns of Deschutes and Lytle. School continued to be held in this building until Jan. 1, 1903, when it was transferred to the building now used as the Catholic Church, and continued there until the present school building was erected in 1906. Leaving the little log school house, with one teacher and a few pupil3, eight years ago, there are at present ten teach ers employed in the district, and the present total enrollment reaches about 190. From n country school we have grown to a well organ ized graded and High school on a par with the leading schools of the state. To Miss Ruth L. Reid (now Mrs. H. J. OvertUrf) belongs the credit of organizing the High School and bringing it to a high standard of excellence. During the present school year three teachers are em ployed in the High School and classes have been formed for all the branches required by the StatQ Course of Study for r High Schools of the First Class, giving a complete four year course. Likewise classesh avc been formed for all the optional branches scheduled in the four year course, with the ex ception of two branches; classes not being formed in these because there were no applicants. The people of Bend now have equal advantages in tlie matter of educating their children from the primary grade to the completion of the High School course with practically any other locality in the state with the exception of Portland and a few of the larger cities. In order to continue its growth and development, the following are the immediate needs of the schools: An addi tional supply of maps, globes, apparatus for the Chemical and Physical laboratories, and reference books. After another year the present school building will not accommodate the pupils.
