SETTLERS' NEWS GLASS BUTTBJIOMGSTIEADER WRITES ENCOURAQOINQLY. Bend Man Who liai Taken Up 320' Acre Homestead In Uljt Free Land Country Telia Uxpeil eacea and Prospects. Kim, Or., Dec a;, 1910 To the IHttor) I 6ml Olass Butte Vallcv the Witt promUinu Dieoe of wumrj I have yet seen in Central Oregon. When I located here six month av(o there wa only one cabin to lie seen in the valley Now I have properoiM netuhlx.tr-. 911 all tittet, no less than li inhabitant on land Cither ailjaining or within half n utile of iny claim. On the way out from llenil the third nlrfht we mvle Rolyat, in Hampton Vl lev, which is promising looking Iron the homvsecker't statiitpolnt. The f inrth night I Mopped in Olma Butte Valley, t8 mites from Rolyat and about 1U (rout Demi by the wagon ro.nl. Upon arrival I found the new, well buitt loxtj cabin, which Mr. Schreder, of Rolyat, had put up for me, at a cost o( flj in October, and lost no time in 'ea tabllahin) residence." Christmas day 1 had finished digging and boring a well 14 feet deep with 6 fret of fine water In a gravel and saml strata, a natural reservoir, which will furnish ample water for all domestic purpose and more too. In digging the well a foot and a half of lUlit rich soil was first encountered then a foot and hall strata of what was at first taken to be "hard-pan" but closer inspection show, this to be hard packet! volcanic ash. I found what it supposed to be sagebrush roots below this in the moist sandy soil It is believed that the tilling of the soil above will cause moisture to reach and soften the hard strata of ashes so that al f.ilfa and other roots wilt penetrate it. Am now clearing sagebrush, but making alow headway. Just the same as the Ilig Bend country In Washington, years ago, people were sceptical, at the settlement of this now rich weat belt, began, the conditions appertaining to the "desert" expanse ol Central Oreiron are, it is said, identically the same At Egli, at the outer eastern edge of Glasa Butte Valley, about nine miles from "Comet," the writer's abode, a good crop of apples was har vested last year. Glass Butte Valley it abont 18 miles long and four wide, with little undula tion. It seems to be less tbku half taken up at present. Th filing of the railroad right-of-wat leads arouud north of the butte, ab jut ic miles away, instead of through the valley a at first surveyed. However, if Hill will extend his "Empire" by construct ing the east-aud-west line of the Oregot Trunk immediately after reaching Hem) we will all be very thankful, and he cer tainly has an empire in this direction to tame. Elick L. Kirk. Tamalo Items. About four inches of snow has fallen within the last few days which promises to lay on well on account of the coli, weather. The Star Ranch hat been putting ur some fine ice lately. They have a ponu at their door anil an ice house iu tin barn close by which makes it handy foi putting up ice. Their ice is about seven Inches thick. The Wimers put up about ten ton for their own use besides a large amount for neighbors. Chas. Johnson is busy putting up his residence on the 40 acre homestead east of this place which he recently acquired Messrs, Gertson and Olaou of Gis passed through this place yesterday on their return from Bend. G. W. and Chat. Witner were Bend visitors yesterday. BEND. .
