GREETINGS FOR THE NEW YEAR AS we stand once more on the threshold of a New Year we wish to briny; n message of greeting to our friends, the good people of Bend and the vicinity. The year now drawing to a close has been an exceedingly prosperous one for Lara's. We have been fortunate In acquiring many new friends and In consequence our business has Increased something over two hundred per cent. Realizing keenly that the measure of our success depends entirely upon the good will of our friends, we wish to extend to you all our hearty thanks for the generous patronage that has made that success possible. We beg to assure you that it will be our endeavor to serve you In an Increasingly better manner in the future. Postmaster Minor recently re ceived a letter from the Pos t office Department which stated that the petition sent in some time ago to have the mail routed in by way of Madras, instead of via Priueville, had been received, and after inves tigation the Department thought best to continue the service as now established. Mr. and Mrs, A- M Drake left yesterday morning for Portland and California, to be absent from Bend the rest of the winter They will probably spend part of the time at Hot Springs, Ark., and the re mainder in Pasadcnu, where thev nave relatives and property and will erect a home for winter use. From Bend they went by auto to Madras, there getting a team for the remainder of the trip. V Schreder, postmaster at Rolyat 90 miles southeast of Bend in the Hampton valley, was in town Sat urday, coming by way of Prine ville, where he secured some school house furnishings which had been discarded by the Priueville school The furniture will Be used in fitting up the new school house at Rolyat, and a three-mouths term of school will be taught there this winter. Mr. Schreder said the winter grain in his section was looking well. Since the building of the Oregon Trunk Railway grade iuto Bend some of the wagon roads entering town have been somewhat changed, making it difficult, in some cases, for Uovelers not acquainted with the recent changes, to find their way after dark. Friday night a rancher who had not been in Bend for several months got off the road and iuto the lava rock, and had some difficulty in gcttiug back to the right , road.
