erals. Thomas Langon has a crew of
engineers in the field setting the
corners on each government legal
subdivision, or 40 arre tract. The
quarter-section corners were set
some five years ago.

The Oregon Trunk Railway
bridge across the Columbia river is

and just below the Tumwater falls.
It will be nearly 4000 feet iu.leugtti
and about 90 feet above low water
of the Columbia. There will le 39
piers with three abutments and be
cause of the rocks on which the
piers ore built there will be no un
der water work. The longest span
will be 330 Icet. The second span
from the south approach is where
the O It & N. road passes under
the bridge. There is to be a 350
foot drawbridge across the govern
merit cunnl.
There will be six 330-font spam
and 17 ioi-foot sp.uis of deck
girders, and ut the south end there
will be three sp.ms with 75-foot
deck girders. The false trestle
work is now built out to the chan
nel of the river from the north bank
and at the end a huge derrick is
stationed, which lifts the tram-cars
tilled with concrete mixture from
the track and swinging them
around dumps it into the wooden
forms for piers. The south trestle
i very much shorter, stopping be
fore it teaches the canal, but u
huge derrick here is performing
the same service that i done on the
north side? It is expected that the
bridge will be ready in a year and
u half from now.

the City Attorney in regard to

The visit of Santa Claus to
Howe's Hconomy Store last Satur
day afternoon and evening was au
interesting event for the children oi
the town, and dozens of the young
sters, many of them with their
parents, were on hand bright and
early to welcome St. Nick. The
boy and girl who first brought the
news to the store of Santa's arrival
and thus won the prizes were

Company Finally Has to Alake Tliem
of Iron Pipe Which Is Now On
the Road Plans for Change
of Pumping Plant.
The Bend Water, Light & Power
Co has been greatly delayed in in
stalling street lighting, by inability
to get, nnywhere on the Pacific
coast, the arms for banging the
lamps out in the streets. After ex
hausting all other means of solving
the difficulty the company whs
forced to the necessity of making
its own arras. For this pnrpoe
It has galvanized iron pipe now on
the wav in from Shaniko and when
it arrives the arms will be erected
on the poles that nre already set
ud the street lighting will be in
stalled in short order.
The arras will be 14 feet long, so
as to swing the lamp as far as prac
ticable toward the center of the
street. A galvanized guy wire
will run from the top of the pole
out to the end of the arm to sup
port it, the end of the arm itself not
being quire to the top of the pole.
The water company is also fig
uring on a change in the place of
taking water from the river. It
finds that sooo feet of 6-inch main
will be required to make connection
with present mains from a pumping
plant to be located h little above
the sawmill. Fitting for a pump
to be electrically opciatcd have
already been ordered. The com
pany docs not wish to buve to
bring in the water pipe by teams
when the railroad is coming so last,
ind will probably defer the change
until the railroad comes unless
more urgent reason shall appear.
