tionalism," which means an increase of government powers.

I favor revision of tbe tariff, on tbe basis of Information furnisbed
by an expert tariff commission.
i tavor government supervision of
puDitc service corporations, but of all corporations doing interstate bus
iness. I favor extension of tbe work of tbe Department of Agriculture, of
tbe national and state governments and of tbe agricultural colleges and
experiment stations, so as to take in all phases of life on tbe farm.
I favor regulation of tbe terms and conditions of labor by
means of comprehensive, workmen's compensation acts, state and na
tional laws to regulate child labor and tbe work of women, enforcement
of better sanitary conditions for workers and extension of tbe use of
safety appliances in industry and commerce, both within and between
tbe states.
I favor tbe direct election of United States senators and the direct
primary associated with the corrupt practices act.

The bylaws were adopted with
out discussion as read and the elec
tion of permanent officers was taken
up.
R. M. Smith, J. L. Byrne and V
A. Forbes were nominated for Pres
ident. None received u majority
on the first ballot and on the sec
ond Forbes received 18 of the 30
votes cast and was declared elected.
Thereafter the club agreed that a
plurulity should elect. Smith was
chosen Vice President by acclama
tion. C. L. Hotaling, J. A. Bastes and
S J Spencer were nominated for
Secretary and 13 vole for the last
named were sufficient to elect him.
After his election he protested
4gaitist serving, but since he had
permitted himself to be voted for it
was deemed too late for him to
withdraw after being thus elected.
S. C. Caldwell by acclamation
was made Treasurer.
C. h. Hotaling, W. B. Sellers, M.
S. Lnttin and J. A. Hastes were
nominated for Directors and the
first three named were elected.
Chairman Lattin, of the com
mittee on hall, reported that the
lower floor of the Chapman building
could be had for S65 a month, the
npper floor of the Caldwell build
ing at $50, the library room in tbe
Johnson building and an addition
to be erected alongide $50, and
the capitalization, not only of

quarters up stairs in the Llnster
building at 45. There were de
tails, as hettt and light and parti
tions, to be considered and the
whole matter was referred to the
Directors with power to close lease
for the quarters deemed best.
The meeting adjourned until the
first Thursday in October.
The Directors yesterday closed a
lease with J. P. Johnson for the
room now occupied by the Bend
Library, which will move into its
new quarters about Oct. t. The
rental to be paid by the club is $ 30
n month.
