young women, the men represent
ing themselves as being in the real

the Cheneys to fix their identity)
said Bend was no good; that the
town attempted to "hold up" the
railroad for $150,000 fur rightof
way and the railroad, as a conic
queucc, was not going ncur Hend,
Alio, and anyway, all railroad work
had been stopped here and the town
was n dead one.
So when the Cheneys ran onto a
new railroad grade in the edge of
Wend anil had to take u new road
around it they were surprised. lint
it was during the noon hour and no
men were observed working at the
moment, and it was assumed that
of couritc, it was abandoned work,
because of Bend's extortionate de
mands. When they heard blasting
resumed the Cheneys began asking
questions and they found all facts
so utterly diucreiit from what had
been represented to them that sur
prise was succeeded by astonish
ment and amazement and they be
came not only eager inquirers, but
great admirers of Uend.
The Cheneys on Friday were
guests of the Lawrences on Haw
thorn avenue, next door to George
Brostcrhous's The Brostcrhouscs
have a fine garden and the visitors
could hardly believe their eyes when
they beheld it. "Why," said Mrs.
Cheney, "they told us the soil here
was only a foot deep, that it would
not hold moiiture and the weather
was so frosty that nothing could
grow; and yet here is one of the
finest vegetable gardens I ever saw
anywhere. What could have pos
sessed those folks to tell us such
stories?"
There were other gardens and
field crops to tell their stories and
the Cheneys were glad to know
them. And they became more in
(crested in Iknd than in auy other
place on the route.

Carcass Lies Close to River.
Complaint has been made that,
the carcass of a dead horse is 1 iug
within a few Iect of the river on
the old Sisemore place, below the
flume bridge. It is understood
that the matter will be placed be
fore county health officials, on the
grounds that the condition is a
menace to the heallhfulucss of the
public water supply.
