As Indicating what may be done by
Intclllyent farming in Central- Oregon,
the achievement of a farmer In the Pow
ell Hultes country is worthy of note.
Two weeks ago he was cutting mature
wheat hay, almost ripe enough to
thresh, and following the hay wagons a
grain drill was sowing oats of an eatly
maturing variety. The hay has beet,
void to a railroad contractor and oals
will be cut for bay early In November.
Last year this same farmer plsntcd a
field to oats of the same variety, and the
oats were bound In the middle of De
rember and threshed out of the shock in
January. With hay selling from f 15 tu
flSatoa, and the prospect of the tnsr
ket keeping thai price, the farmer will
makeahansome thing out of his Indus
try. One fsrmer of the district men
tioned haa contracted 150 Ions to a rail
road contractor at J a loo delivered at
Dend, and as the farmer will do his own
hauling the gross income from each acre
of ground will be a little over Jjo per
acre. Shaniko Star.
