Hon, Kas much to say concerning
the Ucnil country In the Portland
Telegram, under the caption "Ucml
Region Is Real Producer." De
scribing n visit to the Iluckholtz
ranch, near Rend, she writes:
A I drove through the ale I caught
afulit uf Mr. Iliicklioltz. Uiidlnu In the
center ol ureal field of ieas, which In
another ilx week Mill he waist liluli
and ready (or picking. lie came lor
ward to greet me and together we
walked through the garden and orcliard
while he told me of lit experiences,
"I came here five years ago," said he,
"from Twin 1'alls, lilaho, which wa too
windy to ault me. I looked thU over
and decided that despite appearances,
which certainly were dltcouraiMtiif. the
country would make vood once it got
utiilrnllici), anu l uotigiit a "loriy." I
began at once to clear ofl.the sagebrush
and juniper and put 30 of the 40 acrei
under water. I planted my orchard,
alfalfa and clover and began to ex
periment with what .could be done in
truck gardening. Lut year 1 cleared
ft no from my vegetables done- At the
present time I have between eight and
nine acres In vegetables peas, brain.
carrots, cabbage, potatoes, celery, aspar
agus, radishes, onions, etc. There is a
ready market in uenn lor ereryuiing 01
this sort that I can raise, and once an
outilde market Is establishril the open
ings for all kinds of truck farming, as
well as larue farming, will be as fine as
can be found anywhere in Ihe country.
'"I have about eight acres In orchard
with my garden truck growing between
the rows. The orchard, which numbers
some Jjo trees, Is an experiment so far
as choice of varieties Is concerned, for It
is not known what will really do best
here, but I have planted Northern Spies,
lien Davis, Newtown Pippins, Wcalthles
and a few other varieties, and will soon
be able to determine what to put in on a
more extensive scale I believe that all
hardy apples will do well here, and as j
for the other fruits I have some fine cur
rants, goosberrlcs, raspberries and my
Hood Klvcr strawberries are as fine as
anything Hood River itself ever pro
duced." And to prove his statement we
picked and ate haudfula ol the lucious,
firm, led-hcartcd berries, which for fla
vor and carrylngquallties areuncqualed.
Ncarbv were 4ouo atronir. vluorous-look-
lug celery plants, which had just thU
week been transferred from the hotbeds.
I'or this celery he will receive from 10 1
to mi cents a bunch. I
'"The soil seems particularly well
fitted for growing celery," said he,
"When ready for market It Is crisp,
sweet and tender, and vastly superior to
that grown in California and other
places. In fact It simply can't be beat
My asparagus, too, Is a huge success.
The first year that I cut it I made fjo
from four bofoot rows."
Ills potatoes, Mr. Iluckholtz expects,
will yield aoo bushels to the acre this
year. In a section of the country where
"spuds" are the staple for the three
daily meals for an army of some 5000
railroad contructors. the -sue and price
of the potato crop Is a matter of consum
ing interest, inc potatoes crown nerc
are of large site, and particularly mealy
and flee from blemish. A Orecly, Colo
rado, man who went over this couutry
recently said that the soil, particularly
that in the vicinity of Powell Duties, was
almost Identical with that of the famous
Colorado potato section, and that with
out doubt this woulddevelop into a great
potato growing district.
