Mr. Wm. Moore of Madras, accom panied by Mrs. Ringo and children, ar rived hero Sunday. U. D. Angell and V. R. rainier of Fargo, North Dakota, were In town last week. Harter died at an early hour Sunday morning. Tbe funeral was held Monday p. m. at tbe hoaie of Mr. and Mrs. Couch, parents of Mrs. Harter, and was conducted by tbe Rev. Mitchell of Mend. The bereft parents have the sym pathy of the entire community in their sorrow. Quite as enjoyable surprise party was held at the Ilayley school bouse Satur day night, the occasion being the close of school. Miss Montgomery was In vited to the school house and to her sur prise found all her school pupils and many friends from the neighboring country. The evening wat tpent in garnet and mutlc and closed with a feast of ice cream and cake. Miss Montgom ery will be missed in these parts by her many friends. We are gltd to hear of the contract being let for the remainder of the rail road to Vend. Wc hope within a few moths to hear tbe toot of tbe car. Band Victorious ever Slater. Last Sunday afternoon the base ball (earn of tbe fiend Higb School defeated the Sisters team by the de cisive score of 18 to 5. Tbe gome was played at Sisters, many fiend people going over to see it. Mr. Ankeny and his family moved into Ma new home a few days ago. Postmaster Minor, the local weather observer, finds bis time so occupied with his office that it Is impossible for him longer to con tinue the weather record. Tbe mail rush comes at tbe time of day when tbe weather readings have to be taken. It is important that the record be continued and an effort will be made to have it kept by some one who can handle it with out inconvenience. H. J. Kggleston has leased tbe store in the Chapman building for a term of three years and will con duct there a firstclass harness and implement establishment. Mr. Er gleston has been identified with the George Lawrence Company of Portland in the harness and sad dlery business. In farming imple ments he 'will handle the Mitchell & Lewis line. He has already taken possession of tbe premises and ordered bis stock of goods.
