OLD PIONEER SETTLES HERB.
Almost t-lghty, Take Homestead. WIH
(lrow Up With Country.
William A. Offidd, sevcuty-five
years young', drove in to Bend from
Hood River some weeks ago, looked
the country over, liked it, and
forthwith took up a 3ioacrc home
stead in the sage brush country to
the southeast.
The old pioneer is as full of en
thusiasm as he was "way back In
the fifties" when he first came to
Oregon. Then, he says, be" saw
Portland when it was smaller than
Bend now is, and had the oppor
tunity to buy acreage in the heart
of the present city at prices which
now could not purcuase country
property ten miles distant. Also
he bad a hand in the foundine of
Roseburg and Walla Walla, and
declares that now he has come to
Central Oregon to be in at the
making of the big cities of the in
terior, greatest of all of which he
predicts as Bend.
The scplogetierlan horacseeker
has located on land 79 miles from
Bend. Theie he is living with a
small tent as his only shelter, and a
sagebrush shack as a sort of store
bouse. However, he declares that
before many years have passed his
will be suburban property, and
neighboring ranches and towns will
crowd thick about him. One of
the Instances of his first advent to
the new land was that when be got
out there he discovered that he re
quired a pickaxe with which to
make a well, and to get one re
turned the 79 miles to Bend. It is
his intention to "Hay with" hit
land and grow up with the country,
