BEND HAS SECOND BANK. THE INDEX TO COMMUNITY LIFE. Last week. The Bulletin received a letter from a Seattle man prepar ing to head a party coming into the Bead country. He wanted an es timate OB stoves, having carefully examined our advertising columns for prices of such ware without finding them. The Robertses, father and two daughters, who re cently arrived from Iowa to make their home in Oregon, studied The Bulletin all winter and were as fa miliar with the names and charac ter ef business houses as local resi dents. They could not understand, however, why such a community as Bend should be without a meat market, and thought this must be a fine location for a butcher. Our advertising columns now show such an establishment. Another Bulle tin reader writes that he is prepar ing to establish a furniture store in Bead, as, from examination of our advertising columns, he finds no store of that description here. And so it goes through the list. To intelligent people who con template going into a uew country to live the local newspaper is an important vehicle of informttion. They read its news with avidity and study every advertisement to see what sort of business is done and to form some idea of the men who are doing it- Many who are looking for business locations are guided in their investigations large ly by what they find in the local papers. From no other source and jn no other way can so full nod trustworthy information be ob tained as to the character of the people and the range of their activ ities. The local newspaper goes into history as an index of what the community was at the date of publication. Says the Silver Lake Leader, patronizingly: The Redmond Hub Is rejoicing over the fact that they have at last found water at depth of 480 feet. Of course there Is cause for much rejoicing among the people of that enterprising little dtr, but good well of water in this part of the country is not taken into consideration, for in most places a well can be dug in from one to two days, and the best of water U found. Yes, and over in the soggy ley of the Willamette they water on top of the ground. val-find New Institution Opens Today First National Shows Dig Justness.
