Rev. Mitchell will hold services
in Bend next Sunday. After the

II. T. Hendryx, of Portland,
who is to take a prominent part in
reorganizing the old Columbia
Southern irrigation project, was in
Bend and Laidlaw this week rccon

Miss Williams entertained the
Bachelor Maids Monday evening
with a hop at the home of her sis
ter, Mrs. J. M. Lawrence. There
were a dozen couples present. Re
freshments weie served.
Mrs. J. A. Boyd left this morn
ing for Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Boyd
returned to Columbus some time
ago and the family will hereafter
reside there. Mr. Rowlee accom
panied Mrs. Boyd to Shaniko.
Glenn H. Slack of Spirit Lake,
Iowa, writes that he expects to be
present to watch the growing of
Bend and surrounding country the
coming summer. He has a tract
south of town under the Arnold
ditch.

C. L. Hotaling arrived this week
from Ashland, Or., with bis wife.

C. H. Ellis has sold his Powell
Buttes ranch to a Mr. Apple and
has moved to Bend, occupying the
Fry house by the river. Mr. Ellis
may go to contracting. Mr. Apple
is moving onto the place. lie
comes from Newport, Washington.
L. B. Baird and wife and daugh
ter arrived last Saturday night
from Oklahoma to make their home
in Bend. Mr. Baird is to be presi
dent of the new bank of The Des
chutes Banking & Trust Co. The
family is staying at the Bend hotel.
Two Great Northern trains were
swept from the track near the west
portal of the tunnel through the
Cascades, in Washington, by an
avalanche in the great storm oi
last week and 88 persons are miss
ing thereby. Half as many bodies
have been recovered.
John Bloss returned Sunday
night from the East, where he spent
the past five months. He was at
his old home in the neighborhood
of Scrnnton, Penn., two months,
the first visit in 20 years; and uv
spent two months in Northern Wis
consin. Now he is ready to settle
down in Bend.
Among Monday's arrivals in
Bend are R. M. Smith and Mom
O'Donncll of Wellsville, Mo., who
are here to invest and make tbeir
homes In Bend. They were ac
companied by Dr. J. C. Blaine, a
retired physician and capitalist, and
C. W. Reed, another substantial
citizen of Wellsville, who are look
ing for investments in this locality
Ed. White, of Gist, was a Bend
visitor Saturduyl He has the Gib
son ranch under lease and has
sowed about 350 acres of it to rye
Mr. White likes to raise rye, which
can be done without irrigation. He
does not cxpccc to be on the ranch
sumdeiit'y to attend to the ditches.
In fact, he is looking for a stock
ranch and wants to shift trom farm
lug to horsL-taising
W. J. McGillvray was in from
his ranch in the Arnold neighbor
hood six miles southeast of Bend
Saturday. He says the settlers ol
thut section have started their
spring plowing and other farm
work. Mr. JMcUtllvray wilt sow n
lot of rye this week, There is no
certainty of getting water through
the Arnold ditch to this ranch be
fore about July nud rye will grow
without irrigation.
