rooms that Hill had sent n repre
sentative into Central Oregon to
look over the Held. Straudborg
was detailed to t;ct the facts. He
went to the Telegram's "morKtic,"
so called, where thousands ol pho
tos are kept in readiness for publi
cation, and hecurcd half a dozen
pictures of men allied with the Hill
interests, among which was Stevens
With these in his possession he
visited every hotel of Importance iu
the city or Portland in au effort to
identify the man supposed to be
traveling incognito throughout the
interior. After two days' search
the photo of Stevens was recognized
by the chief clerk of the Nortouia.
"That man has had a suit of
rooms here for six weeks; his name
is Sampson," was the response to
the inquiry.
The rest was easy. One thread
led to another. "Sampson" it was
soon learned, was getting mail at
the Portland Hotel under the name
tiis mother and father gave him.
When confronted with the facts,
officials of the Oregon Trunk tacitly
admitted nil the other details which
created a furore of excitement when
the story was published a few hours
later.
