STEVENS MAKES STATEMENT
(Continued from pRc t.)
be early next fall, but that he could
not make a definite promise, ns
much of the work yet to be done Is
very heavy.
Rinlt'Ofway men have been at
work lor weeks betwecu Madra
and Bend and it is known that
practically all the necessary lands
have been acquired. Graders have
been nt work south of Crooked
river crossing several mouths and
men have been engaged in blasting
approaches for the bridge spanning
the chasm. This is 10 or 13 miles
south of Madras.
, Bridge Is Remarkable.
The Crooked river bridge, says
Mr. Stevens, will hove only one
other counterpart anywhere, so far
as he knows. There is a steel arch
over a canyon on the Victoria Ny
anra route in Africa that is very
similar. The Canadian Pacific, in
its crossing of Stony creek in the
Selkirk, has a bridge that in Mime
particulars, but not all, is similar
The Stony creek bridge crones
over the water at a height ot about
300 feet, but the ranyon is "V"
shaped, and there is a stwl ap
proach to the arch on each side
The Crooked river arch will spring
at both sides from perpendicular
rock walls and pan the river at p
height of about 380 feet. Ilt will
be one of the highest arch bridges
in the world. This arch will have
to be built out from each side of the
canyon to the meeting poiut as the
canyon is too deep to permit the
use of lale work. The span will
be 320 feet long Oregoutrtn
