In an automobile shop at Portland
to learn the mysteries of those
popular machines. He writes that
lie will return to llcnd next spring
with a six-cylinder Maxwell, and
will go after the pnvtciiKcr business
with his new machine'.
Postmaster Minor reports that
two packages were recently re
ceived at the Ikud office, each hav
ing been mailed on the same day,
one from Madras and the other
from Chicago, and they both
reached llend in the same mall. A
sad but nevertheless true commen
tary on the mall service of Crook
county and Central Oregon.

shaw left Monday fur the railroad
on their wav to California where
they will spend the winter.
Mr. and Mrs. Roscoc Howard
and children left last Friday for
Portland where Mrs. Howard and
the children will spend the winter.
Miss Grace McKcnzie, who has
been ill for two months with
typhoid fever, was taken recently
to the Bend hospital in order that
she might receive better care, and
is making rapid improvement.
William iloccll brought in his
last load of apples yesterday. He
marketed .something like 3.000
bushels this season and received an
average price of f 1 a bushel. His
apples are as good as any raised in
Oregon. Priucville Journal.
E. II. Overman, editor of the
Shaniko Star, has been arrested on
a charge of forgery. He is also
wanted at Spokane for issuing
checks on a bunk in which he had
on deposit. Overman has had a
varied newspaper career. He start
ed the star about a mouth ago.

of the Frst National Hank, pre
sented the Ladies' Library Club
last week with a Christmas dona

rapher, has received during the

The crew that was cleaning out
and repairing the Central Orceon
; canal and which was laid off on
Dec. .4 on account of the bad
weather, will resume work as soon

Moore is getting everything ready
and in shape so that work can be
started With a vim, and says 35 or
30 teams will be needed.
Undoubtedly the best ice that
has been put up iu Bend for years
is now being harvested from the
Swalley pond. It ranges from to
to 13 inches thick, is solid and
compact and free from dirt. Al
dridgc & Hobbs paid 550 for this
year's crop from the pond and arc
tilling practically all the Ice houses
In town. There will be no Ice
famine in Bend next summer.
The contract for the grading of
the Nevada-California Oregon rail
road Irom Alturas to Lakcview has
been let to the Nugent-Richardson
Construction Company, and work
will begin In about a month. It is
believed by many that this road
will connect with the Oregon
Trunk Line, the N-C-O general
manager having announced Mime
time ago that it would be extended
from Alturas to The Dalles.
Last Thursday a contest was
heard before U. S. Commissioner
Hills, in which Dr. Dixon of Red
mond brought contest against the
decrt land entry of Mrs. Hugh
O'Kanc, the land lying north of
Redmond and near the new town of
Hillman. The basis of the contest
whs the allegation by Dr. Dixon
that the required annual improve
ments have not been made and that
it is impovtible to get water to re
claim the land, all of which was de
nied by the contestec.
F. C. Rowlec has bought the
stock of the Rend News Stand and
will hereafter conduct that busi
ness. A second story will be put
onto the present building, and
another two story building. 34x24
feet, will be built adjoining it on
the south. Mr. Rowlee has bought
the O'Kanc bowling alley, and will
Install it iu the rear of the building.
He intends to put in a stock of
men's furnishings in the spring.
