ter his freight outfit to be used in
moving the camp south in the
neighborhood of Bend. Hub.
The family of J. T. Pierce is on
its way to Bend from Washougal,
Wash. Mr. Pierce rtccntly pur
chased 40 acres of the Philip
Frances homestead and will engage
in the raising of full blood Jersey
cattle. He also contemplates
bnilding n fine new house on the
place.
F. M. Saxton, of Baker City,
superintendent ot water division
No. 2, arrived in Bend Monday.
Mr. Saxton will preside at the tak
ing of testimony in the determina
tion of water rights on Paulina
lake and creek, the hearing of
which is to be held in Bend to
morrow. Farmers in this vicinity are do
ing considerable plowing at this
time. ' How is that for winter farm
work? The copious showers have
soaked the soil to a great depth and
every indication points to a bumper
crop for the dry farmers next year.
Of course, the irrigators are always
sure of plenty of water.
Bend and the surrounding coun
try get some very good advertising
in a half-page mention in the de
velopment section of of the Decem
ber Pacific Monthly. It speaks of
the coming railroad development,
of our various resources, and pic
tures the Bend country as the
"coming" section of the Northwest.
More good work by the Board of
Trade.
The Merrill & Wilkinson Com
pany made a fast trip, with their
automobile, to the High Desert and
return on Thursday of last week,
making the round trip in I2
hours. They left town at 7 tfclock
in the morning and got back about
7:30 that evening, in the meantime

The illustrated lecture Saturday
evening by Rev. Lcwtas on his
travels through Europe was most
interesting and instructive. A
large audience was in attendance,
who fully appreciated the pictures
and Mr. Lewtas1 discourse. The
lecture was educational in a high
degree. Rev. Lcwtas will deliver
a similar lecture tomorrow evening
on "What I Saw in Greece, Tur
key, Syria, the Holy Land and
Egypt." A liberal attendance is
assured.
