"When we get our railroad, which now looks so promising, with this vast acreage of wheat land so close to Bend, there should be an excellent opening at Bend fot some very large flour mills, and I confidently expect to see that in dustry start up at this place. Several real estate firms havt started to locate homesteaders on this tract, and quite a number of people from Bend and vicinity have visited it during the past week. It will undoubtedly be rapidly filed upon. TO ADVERTISE BEND. Move Started to TeH to the World the Advantages of This Place. A HHaber of Betid men gathered in Hunter & Staats office last even. Ing and organized the Bend Board of Trade, the object of this organi zatioa being to advertise Bend and the resources that will make Bend a city. The organization elected officers as follows: President, C. S. Hud son; secretary, G. P. Putnam; treasurer, . A Sather. Board of directors: John Steidl, E. A. Cast and Hugh U'Kane. The secretary will act in the capacity of corresponding secretary and it U the intention to insert in various publications, articles des criptive of this section. Advertis ing literature will also be gotten out. Another meeting will be held to night at Hanter & Staats' office. Lack of time forbids a more exten sive mention of this worthy move, fuller details of which will be given later. New Uae From Albany East. The proposed railroad known as the Central Oregon & Pacific was recently incorporated in Oregon, with $50,000 capital, aud with offices in Portland. The plans call for a line from Albany, Ore., east serosa the Cascade range to On tario, ia Malheur county, on the Idaho boundary, 335 miles. The incorporators include: Franklin T. Griffith, Horsey B. Smith and Charles H. Warner, of Portland. Notice. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Linstcr, and Millard Triplett and Gene Getchcll left this afternoon for a trip over to the Valley after fruit. The Ladies' Library Club will ;ivc its aunual watermelon festival on the A. M. Drake lawn next Saturday afternoon and evening. There will be a "whole, great big" wagou load of the luscious melons, ,tud everyone may feast to their hearts' content. Ice cream will dso be served, and their will be various other amusements and at tractions. The news comes to Bend that the recent illness of Mrs. Frank Mc Kay at Wciscr, Idaho, was due to ptomaine poisoning from catinp canned peas. When the poison first began to show its effects, the) .supposed Mrs. McKay was simpl) troubled with cramps that would pass away in a short time, and a doctor was not called. However, as she continued to get worse a doc tor was hurriedly summoned and found her so low when he arrived that it was neccessary to use prett) strong drugs to save her. It wat quite a close call and has left Mrs. McKay in a very wcakeued con dition. Mark Rickard, Patrick Stewart and Glen Ireland of Corvallis Icjt that place last Saturday at 9 o'clock in Mr. Rickard's Studebaker cat and got into Bend Sunday evening about 7 o'clock, coming over the Santiam route. Monday morning they left town at 10 o'clock and, accompanied by J. N. Hunter, started for the High Desert, get ting onto the land about 7:30 that evening, where Mr. Hunter located each of them on a 320 acre home stead. Mr. Hunter speaks in glowing- terms of the auto, and said it was a great traveler. Messrs Hunter & Staats have located 14 entrymen during the past week. TtHttato Items. Tumalo, Aug. 30.
