Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Drake, Mrs.
Waitc, and Mr. Robertson were
guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. It. Ryan
last Sunday at their pleasant home
at The Tulcs.
G. P. Putnam nnd father, J. B.,
accompanied by "Dad" West, left
Friday morning (or a two weeks'
outing at Crane Prairie, and other
up-river points.
M. It. Rogers and wife of Princ
ville spent a few days in Bend the
latter part of last week. They
were on their way to the upper
Deschutes on a camping expedition.
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Lara and
son Morris, nnd Mrs. Maddock re
turned Sunday evening from a
week's camping at the J. I). Hey
burn homestead on the upper river.
Miss Hazel Caldwell left yester
day morning for Portland where
she will visit Mr. and Mrs. H. R.
Satchwcll and other relatives. She
will also visit the Seattle exposition
before returning.

Claude and Will Vandevcrt and
Miss Grace wcro down from their
ranch Monday and Tuesday. On
their return they were accompanied
by Miss Pauline Wicst who will
visit there for a few days.
Miss Florence C. Young has
been engaged to teach the McGill
vroy school for the coming year.
Miss Young is a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. John Young, and but re
cently arrived from Nebraska.
Joe Buckholz reports that he has
watermelons in his garden as large
as n man's head. Good thing for
Joe that access to that patch is
rather difficult and removed from
the immediate vicinity of town.
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Drake, ac
companied by their guests, Mrs
Waite and Mr. Frank Robertson of
Portland, left yesterday morning
on an auto trip for Crater Lake
where they will send about a week.
The apple trees on the old Col
lins place, about two miles north of
Betid, were loaded with their usual
yield of fruit this year, but some
one has made away with the crop,
not waiting for the apples to ripen.
Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Silvertooth
and daughter Chattie were in Bend
Monday on the way to their home
at Antelope, after spending some
time at Silver Lake, where Mr.
Silvertooth has property interests.
V, O- Minor has been appointed
weather observer for Bend and now
has the instruments installed in the
rear of the postofficc. This will be
quite a convenience again, after
having the service discontinued for
several months.
L. M. McReynotds returned to
Bend Monday evening from a trip
through the Willamette valley to
Portland, where he was called by
the death of his aged father. Mr.
McRcynolds was accompanied by
Mr. and Mrs. C. L- Gist, of Gist,
Mrs. Gist being a daughter of the
deceased.
The dates for the county fair this
year will be on Oct. 19 to 23 in
elusive. The fair promises to be
bigger and better than ever, and
all should plan to attend. Save
samples of your crops for exhibits
and help make this fair the success
that it deserves to be. A fine pro
gram of races, is being urrunged.
Mike McGrath returned the first
of the week from Spokaue and
other outside points. He had gone
out to participate in the laud draw
ings, took a chance in each of the
three drawings but fuiled to laud a
