A sample of Norway rye was brought into this office from Peter Nelson's place, the heads of which were so full of grain that they look almost like miuature cars of corn. Miss Uccd will make quite an extended visit to Portland and Seattle, thence going to Chica go, St. Louis and other points in the Kast before returning. Prine villc Review. Dr. A. A. Burris, who was at Madras last week, reports that a railroad contractor was in town when he was there endeavoring to hire teams for a camp to be estab lished on Sagebrush Flats, which is 10 miles north of Madras. The contractor was one of Twohy's men. Dr. A. A. Uurris visited his farm near Madras last week. He found the crop practically ruined by the wire worms so worthless that he decided to do nothing with it The wire worms have done considerable damage in his immediate neighbor hood this year, but the doctor re lorts that crou on the north end of Agency Plains are quite good. Porter, who for years has oper ated a threshing machine around Priucvillc, lost his machine by fire about midnight last Thursday. It is not known how the fire started. M. George Cook of Portland has been engaged as chauffeur. Rev. F. It Scoficld and wife, of Dora, Coos county, Or , father and mother of Dr. I. L. Scoficld, left Bend Monday morning after visit ing three weeks with their son and his family. They drove over com ing by the McKcnzic route and went back over the Santiam. G. P. Putnam came in last even ing after spending a couple of weeks in Portland and inspecting the rail road work nlong the Deschutes. He was accompanied by his father, J. H. Putnam, of New York City, ol the firm of O. P. Putnam's Sons. Mr. Putnam, Sr., is taking a trip through the West. M. M. Davenport phoned in to The Bulletin last Friday that light ning, on Thursday afternoon, had started n raging fire in the long bunch grass on the north side of Horse Ridge in 19-14, and that there was much dancer that it would run into th: limber. The news was phoned to Supervisor Ireland at Priucvillc, who took the matter in charge. While P. A. Wooley was coming in to Bend he fell in with one of Porter Bros.' subcontractors on the train. Mr. Wooley was naturally inquisitive and "looking for infor mation" and the contractor finally said: "If you are going into the Bend country with the intention of making investments that would be bcucfitted by the building of a rail road, I will say this much, don't be afraid to jump in for all you're worth."
