BEND'S CELEBRATION

but none of the buckaroos wanted
to tackle the job.
Two Ueod Morse Racjs.
Then followed the horse rnccs.
The first, a pony race, was won by
Fanny," owned by. Winter &
Sous of Turaalo. Second pnr.se
was won by a black, also owned by
Wimer & Sons. Purses, $15-00
and $5.
The horse race was won by a
bay owned by V. II. Staats, of
Bend, with a gray in second, owned
by Yancey of Prineville. PurhCs,
$15 and $10. Covert, of Redmond,
had a brown mare entered, which
led the race until the very finish
when the Staats horse passed her.
Covert's jockey claimed lie had
been misinformed- as to the goal
and pulled his horse up. Others,
standing at the point which the
Covert jockey thought was the
finish, claim that the Staats horse
was in the lead even at that point.
Tbejadges gave the race to Staats,
claiming it was the jockey's busi
ness to know where the race should
end
That ended the official program,
at about 8 o'clock in the evening
Later the band boys had charge of
the bowery dance, which was given
in tuc targe pavilion usea ior ac
morning exercises. An exception,
ally large crowd was in attendance,
the receipts being $110.
Bend'a Fourth Attract Attention.
The Oregon Development League
f-ends qut a weekly news letter to
the various newspapers of the state.
The last letter speaks of Bend's
celebration as follows:
"Bend had a Fourth of July cele
bration that was probably the most
unique in the country because of
one great feature, a trout barbecue.
There are numerous places in the
statr that could duplicate it, prob
ably, but where throngbout the
Kast could such an affair be held?
Besd had about 3500 trout served
to those In attendance at the cele
bration, certainly a splendid adver
tisement of Oregon's attractions as
a fisherman a paradise."

Cost of Railing Calf.
There are some thing of, which I do
not keep a strict debit and credit ac
count and ralslnx calrea to cows Is
one, but I strongly suspect that I can
not produce a good, well grown heifer
with her first calf for 50 or perhaps
$00, but tho expense conw gr4ually,
and after awhile one hat a One young
cow and does not always bare the $00
to buy one. Then the strong point Is
that If tho calf has been bred right
with a good cow for Its dam and for

embrace the reasonable assurance that
the calf will develop Into a heifer and
the heifer Into a cow that will mature

Good One dairy salt should be used
and never the common coarse barrel
salt that la used by many. The salting
may be done In the churn when the

a box or barrel chum. The salt can
be sifted on the butter by putting on a
part then revolving the churn halfway
over, thus making the butter fall with
the salted side down, then sifting 00
the rest of tho salt Then revolve the
churn a few tunes, after which the but
