Bend, Oregon. 1013
Last Friday Mrs. J. A. Boyd en
tcrtaiucd at lunebcon the young
ladies of the high school graduating
class. Those present were: Miss
Schoolcraft, Miss Hightower, Miss
Wicst and Miss Pauline Wicst,
Miss Van dc Vert nud Miss Grace
Van de Vert, Miss Wilson, Miss

Road Supervisor Richardson has
a lot of work cut out for him this
season. Beginning three miles cast
of Bend on the Bear Creek road, he
will construct 8 miles of new
highway directly east. He will
also do seven miles of work on the
ice cave road. Some repairing will
de done on the Turaalo road. In
all, be has 32 miles of road work to
attend to.
J. A. Silvertooth of Silver Lake
passed through Bend the first of the
week with a curiosity in the shape
of a back sheep with a double set
of bores. The animal had the us
ual horns curving upward from the
bead, and in addition, at the base
of each horn, a smaller horn curves
outward and downward toward his
mouth one on each side of his
bead. Silvertooth was taking the
sheep to Seattle with tbe expecta
tion of selling it as a freak.
Already the high school people
are laying their plans for next
season. In the autumn 25 or more
pupils will be enrolled, of 'which
number bat four or five will be
girls. This means good prospects
for athletic teams and with the
proper support, there is bo reason
why this branch of school activity
should not prosper. Next year
will also see a decided effort made
to establish debating and public
speaking upon a firm footing.
Mr. E. N. Strong, special repre
sentative of the Oregon Life of
Portland, Oregon, is in the city for
a few days. Mr. Strong has been
at Prineville for the last six weeks,
and reports the largest business
written there by bis company ever
done in that section of the country
"by any company in the same length
of time. In talking to a reporter
for Tbe Bulletin yesterday, Mr.
Strong said: "Oregonians arc
realizing tbe great benefit of keep
ins; the money heretofore sent to
Eastern states where only a small
portion returns, at home." We
bespeak a lurge business for Mr.
Strong while be is in Bend.
J. W. Howard, the well known
stockman and pioneer of Crook
county, has been spending tbe week
assessing tbe tax-payers hereabouts.
Mr. Howard called attention to tbe
fact that bis son, Roland R. How
ard, born and raised in Crook
county, was tbe author of that ad
mirable article that appeared in the
Pacific Montblv for May, the "liar
riman Pence." This article de
scribed tbe railroadless condition of
Eastern Oregon and showed the
injustice of keeping it bottled up, as
Harriman is doing. The article
was widely read in Bend and at
tracted much favorable comment.
Mr. Howard, Jr., is also editor of
the department that appears regu
larly in the above magazine, on de
velopment features of tbe North
west. He took bis degree from
Ann Arbor two years ago,
Civil War Relics.
The spirit of tbe days of '61
seems to hover about the corner of
modern Bend where from tbe win
dow of A.M. Lara's'big store"
looks out k rare collection of relics
of tbe civil war.
In the window, displayed against ,
a large American flag, arc battle
scarred muskets, sabers that have
seen service on the field of Gettys
burg, nrmy coals, battered cantccus,
a pocket-book which saved its
owners life by stopping a bullet,
and many another' historic sou
venicr.
Several of the exhibits were the
property of Col. Fox, of the totst
Illinois, the grandfather of A. At,
Lara, who raised bis own regiment,
entered the war with it numbering
1040 men and disbanded, in '64
with but 331 survivors.
In connection with the relics, n
curious incident is related by
Thomas Tweet, war veteran. It
seems that he and H. C. Barney
wetc serving picket duty but n few
rods apart when suddenly the
"Rcbs" swooped down and cap
tured Barney. That was iu the
sixties. Three months ago Tweet
and Barney came face to face on the
streets of Bend.
