in Bend did in fact, a little the best store in this part
of the country.
I spread some paint around here and there until
the store looked sonic better. Then I put in the
kind of n stock that I thought the people wanted. I
Klicss I must huve jtit about hit it, because they have
been wanting it ever since
I tried to give everybody a square detl to give
a dollars worth of goods for every dollar left in my
store and I gueM I did, because they keep coming
back right along to get that suntc square deal right
over again.
I guaranteed my goods to be just what I said
they wcrt to be just what you want or you could
get your money back and no questions stilted. A good
many times I have been asked how I could do it. It
is easy enough. I buy goods that I feel sure are
absolutely right sell them at a reasonable profit and
then they don't come back. "They stay sold" and you
are satisfied.
I guess the people out here haven't been ustd
to that kind of treatment teforc at least that is what
a good many told me but they seemed to like it.
Any way, my business lust year was just four times
what I cxcctcd it would be. A good many people
like my way of doing business. I want YOU to like it.
I want you to come in and see me perhaps you can telj
me how I can run a letter store this year than I did last.
Anyway, I would like to hove YOU tell MU

J. II. Dean was over from his
homestead in the Sisters country
last Saturday. He is taking a
ditch out of Ttimalo creek with
which to irrigate 35 acres of his
homestead, and says he will have
the ditch completed in about a
couple of weeks.
C. II. Turner, who has had a
lcaic of the Pilot Iluttc Inn for the
past few months, left for Portland
something over a week ago, and it
is now understood he has skipped
out leaving several bills unpaid.
A. C. Lucas has taken back the
hotel and is conducting it as usual.
The entertainment given by the
Whatsoever Monday evening was
another pleasant evening for those
present. The "Six Cups of Choco
late" amused the audience while it
was being presented, and then the
grab begs, refreshments and social
hilarity helped to pass the time en
joyably. The net proceeds were
about $40.

ville came over to Mend last Satur
day to deliver to Uend Masons their
dispensation from the grand lodge
and to start the local lodge in its

II. G. Caldwell spent two or
three days in Bend the latter part
of Inst week from the Caldwell
ranch 011 Paulina creek six miles
this side of Holland. During the
recent unfavorable weather Mr.
Caldwell has been busy putting up
a new barn, aud now has a struc
ture 50x60 feet. The CuldwHN
put up a lot of luy each year from
this ranch, mostly wild hay, but
they report that redtop and timothy
do very well under irrigation. They
have built u dam at the ou'.lct of
Paulina lake by which they raise
the water of that hike several feet,
and use it during the summer to ir
rigate their huv land Mr. Cald
well is cuthusiustic over the section
in the vicinity of his home, and says
that when the railroad comes it
will be one of the finest stock and
dairy countries to be found any
where. The masquerade dance Friday
night was one of the pleasantest
events of the winter. A large
crowd attended, and some very
pretty and unique costumes were
worn by the maskers. The lailie'
grand prize went to Miss Cornelia'
Wilson, who was masked to repre
sent Mariha Washington Homer

IkXIi dressed to represent Moorish
knight and they were- allowed to
draw lots lor the gentlemen's prize,
Mr. Bogge.ss winning. The prizes
for the mo.st humorous characters
went to Harry Smith, u& Hippy

an Indian girl. Fred Lucas cap
tured the boys prize dressed as a
jockey, and Mrs. Ballard Giles the
girls prize, being dreseu to repre
sent a bat. The judges were Mrs.
Wiest, Mrs Flt.uuuricc and John
Steidl. The hull was very prettily
decorated, the Bend baud discoursed
sweet music, and everyone hud a
most enjoyable time. One of the
surprises of the evening was perpe
trated by the members of the baud,
who marched tutu the hall dressed,
iu most ridiculous outfits, to repre
sent the Ladles' Library Club, un
der whose uuspices the dance was
given. It was really the "hit of
the evening, aud was a surprise to
everyone The ladies cleared about
foo for the library.
