LIKES BEND COUNTRY.
Says Fruit Will De Successfully drown
Merc as Country Grows Older.
A. F. Shirctuan, who recently
came to Bend from Victor, Idaho,
with the intention of locating, is
very much pleased with Bend and
vicinity. In nn interview with
The Bulletin Mr. Suircmann told
of conditions that existed in his
former home, which, when com
pared with those that exist in this
section, should be very encourag
iug to Deschutes valley settler.
Mr. Shircmaii lived in Teton
Basin, which has an elevation of
7,000 feet. The IJasin consists of a
valley 10 or 12 miles wide bounded
on both sides by high mountain.
In that valley they raise an abun
dance of all kinds ol small fruit nnd
many young orchards arc coining
into bearing and arc yielding an
excellent quality of apples. In
fact the valley raises practicallv all
the fruit it can consume, and the
supply is increasing ns the develop
ment of that section grows older.
Last spring Mr. Shircmauu re
ceived a letter from his cousin, Mrs
K. A. Griffin of Demi. In the let
ter ahe stated that crop were up
and looking well here. At the
same time tlu crops in the Teton
IJasin were covered with snow, .so
Mr. Shiremanu states,
The encouraging feature of Mr.
Shiremann's interview is that if
fruit can be raised at an elevation
of 7,000 feet and in a climate such
as he describes, it surely can he
grown at llcnd otid vicinity, where
the climate is milder and the ele
vation ranges from 3,000 to 3,600
feet only. It has already been
demonstrated by L. D. Wiest, J. I.
West and others living on the scg.
rrgation that small fruit can be
grown' here in great abundance,
mid it is quit,e evident that apples
and other fruit will also yield well
as soon a the orchards are old
enough. to bear, ,
Mr. Shircniaun has been looking
over several tracts of hind and will
undoubtedly locate near Bend.
