FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 190S.
NONSENSICAL ciiATTER.
Throughout the recent campaign
and now that the result is known,
! few papers over the state have
.been raising a preat hue and cry
against the primary law and espec
ially Statement No 1. They take
the stand that it is ridiculous to
ask a republican legislator to elect
a democrat to the United States
senate. They apparently forget
that legislators are supposed to be
the servants of the people and
should do the bidding of those who
elected them. These same papers
are invariably advocates of popular
rejection of united btaUs senators
and yet when the people express a
.preference for a democrat they start
up their illogical chatter that a
servant of the people should not
.cast Lis ballot so as to carry out
the people's wish. In other words,
'they stand for popular lection of
senators,, but object to the legisla
tors ratifying the; people's choice,
t,; These su toe papers have main-'tnined-ttmt
a Statement No. r re
ipublicab would never vote for a
'democrat when it came time to elect
3 senator, and that the statement
yfras a farce and a delusion.' Since
the election practically every State
ment No. 1 -republican who was
sleeted has said he certainly would
ihold to his promise and vote for
Gov. Chamberlain. That indicates
-clearly how far these papers are
from understanding the sentiment
of the people and reading aright
the trend of the times.
Tiie people of Oregou are in favor
-of Statement No. 1 because it gives
Xhera a voice in the election of their
ttational senators.
disgusted with the newfangled re
forms as some love co call the new
jaws they are going to adopt oth
ers and still more advanced ones.
The beayy vote in favor of the re
call clearly indicates that.
The people are sick and tired of
state legislatures where votes for
U. S. senators arc bought and sold
as freely, as goods are trafficked on
the streets, and of a national senate
that opposes or contemptuously,
ignores every law proposed for the
benefit of the people. They are
sick unto death of a senate filled
with the hirelings and puppets of
the trusts and the "interests."
They propose to clean out this
rabble and keep the power of gov
ernment in their hands, and they
will do it by means of such meas
ures as the primary law, Statement
No. 1, the recall, and the like.
It is bard for the man whose hair
is turning gray and who has been a
power in the old time political con
vention, where he matched his
strength against his opponent's
and cither won or went down in a
battle that aroused all the joys in
cident to struggle and possible
victory it is bard for such men to
see the wisdom of the "new
tangled" laws that strip them of
their power and give it back to the
people. They vainly shout that
the country is going to the dogs
and that the importance of party
principle is entirely forgotten by
the present rabble. Their chatter
affords only a pitiful siht of one
time ability barking at the wheels
of progress.
tuere suoulu be but one opinion as
to obedience to law. We have a
sheriff who has promised to enforce
prohibition if the people voted to
adopt it. Then let th. law be en
forced. '
Apropos of the subject of "ring"
politics, didn't the Crook county
"ring" receive a beautiful jolt at
the recent erection.

The people of Crook county have
expressed themselves in .favor of
prohibition by.a.vote of-1 140 to 556,
a majority of 784, or more than two
to one. That is the decision of the
majority and hence, under Ameri
can government, it becomes law.
It now becomes the duty of every
law abiding citizen to abide; by this
decree of the majority and to see
that the law is -en forced
The Bulletin presents this week,
on the Grst page, a cut of .Judge

Mr. lillis or 331. While the, vote
given Mr. Ellis is very satisfactory,
the greatest reason for congratula
tion to the voters is that Crook
county is now assured a business
like and fair administration of the
judge's office. Mr. Ellis is a busy
man, and gives the closest attention
to whatever he undertakes. He
will give this same painstaking at
tention to county affairs. He takes
but little time for "play" or relaxa
tion. As an example we might
state that Mr, Ellis has never been
a member of any lodce or fiaternal
order except Uis college fraternity,
and when ask6d the reason there
for he , replied that he had never
had the time to devote to thtm
Willi him business comes first.
Here's congratulations to Crook
county on its new. county judge.
A vigorous fight was waged,
against "macliine" politics in Ioke
county during the recent campaign
wilh the result that the I'raachine"
received some rather serious body
blows. Out of four ami machine
candidates,' two were elected with a
possibility that a third would prove
to be a winner when complete re
turns cvcrein, The two Silver Lake
papers have? fought valiantly to
overthrow the '"ring," for which
they should be given much credit.
They fought for a good cause.
AraericaiiTstfduTd"ha've"no time for
"ring" politics.
