SUPPORT Tim UNIVERSITY.
Once more The Uiillctin would
urce unou the voters the necessity
of supporting the state university
by votuiR in favor of the measure
to increase the annual appropriation
for the maintenance of that institu
tion. The fact that certain of Ore
gou's citizens have held up a much
needed appropriation for the state
university hi order to refer it to a
fcfcrenduu1 vote, is attracting much
unfnvqribie comment all over the
I'nitcdJ States. The position Hint
man v "Eastern papers are taking is
that" if "Oregon should vote down
this appropriation it will bcevidcuce
that this great commonwealth does
taot favor higher education. One
Iown paper says: "The present
appropriation amounts to but $47,
500 per year for maintenance,
which compared with our own uni
versity's 335.go looks rather
meagre. It seems that a good
raanv in that state arc so short
sighted as to Sght, further appro
priation. We are surprised
at this ichlimcnt against progression
Defeat for the bill means a serious
setback" to her future progress."
' Do Oregon voters want the above
verdict to be lodged against their
jute? Do they desire to hayc the
people froni other states look upon
Ss as a state that does not appre
ciate the advantages of education
In other words, a state of ignor
amuses and mossbacksf 1 hat is
precisely the staiiding Cfrcgon will
have if she turns down this appro
priation. The defeat of .the appro
priation will turn thousands of new
comers Horn lour doors for they will
hot niSVelMtd a state where their
children caS 'not be educated.,
The Bu.iCtin has heretofore
urged the necessity antl'ya,lue to a
state of a well- equipped ' (atid pro
gressive state university. It will
not now take the space to repeat
those arguments. Every voter is
undoubtedly familiar with them.
But we will say in passing that
the great state of Oregon t should
provide ample means for the educa
tion of every boy and girl and te very
young man and woman in her
borders. To do tins requires an
efficient state university.
I Some claim that this appropria
tion, excessive. If this bill is
pasaed .what will it cost you? It
tfill cost you? an increase in taxes
("estimated on-the 1908 valuation)
i'l-ro cent's on every 1000 worth
of property What man is so small
as not to be willing to pay such a
small amount for a much needed
state institution? We are confident
there are but few such men in Ore
gon. Therefore, voters, look for No.
314 on the official ballot and be
certain to vote "Yes." Do net
overlook it through indifference
Prove that Oregon is progressive.
