Wm, Stephens has ofdered a
gasoline launch from Detroit,
Michigan, ami will operate the boat
on the Deschutes above Hcnham
Palls. The craft is i3- feet long
with n five foot beam and draws 14
inches of water. The engine is
three horscjKMvcr. The boat has
bean shipped and is now on its way
to Ucud. Such a boat can be run
for n distance of about .j6 miles,
measuring the course of the river,
and should provide atmcaus for
much sport for jicople iu this
vicinity.
John I.iustcr had a close call
from being killed by a falling tree
last Tuesday, He and his father
were cutting a tree Iu order to
enable them to roll logs into the
river 011 the west side opposite their
mill. Leaning against this tree
nan 11 dead pine, As the tree
started to fall John darted away in
one direction nud then noticed thnt
the tree was falling that way.
Hcfote he could get out of the way
the dead pine struck him across
the back and knocked him between
two rocks, which protected him
from tlfe full weight of the tree.
Had it not been for the rocks he
would have been crushed to death.
As it was !:c 'received n bad cut on
the chin nud five teeth were
knocked out He is up and about
but wears a big bandage ubout his
head.
