Explosion of the Deadly Black Damp
Slays 400 Men and Wreck
Two Coal Mines.
Mononpah, W. Ta., Deo. 7. That
not less than 400 minora wcro killed by
an explosion ot black damp In mines
No, 0 and No. 8 ot tho Consolidated
Coal company, ot Baltimore, at this
placo yesterday, is now conceded by
those who take the most hopeful ami
most conservative view ot tho disaster.
Fire badly injured men mado their way
to the surface.
Ot tho victims six dead bodies had
been taken from mine No. G al mid
tiight and 65 more wcro piled up in
the entry awaiting completion ot fact)
tics for bringing them to tho surface.
From mine No. 8 at tho same hour. 14
bodies had been removed and a number
of others are ready to be brought out
as soon as arrangements' can be com
pleted.
There la much speculation as to the
cause of the explosion, but the most
generally accepted theory is that it re
sulted from black damp, scientifically
known as methano. It Is believed that
a miner attempted to set off a blast,
which blow out and Ignited an accum
ulation ot this deadly gas, and that
this in turn ignited the coal duit, a
highly inflammable substance found
in greater or Ies quantities in all West
Virginia mines. However, all expla
nations of the cause np to this time are
necessarily speculative. Only a thor
ough Investigation after the mine is re
opened vrJII diicloio the cause, if it is
ever ascertained. Tho explosion affect
ed loth mines, and so far as now known
appears to have done about as much
damage in one as In the other. It has
sot been established in which mine it
originated.
Three of the living men, whilo unable
to give any detailed report of the dlsas
ter, state that immediately back of
them, when tbey began their frantio
struggle for liberty, there wai a large
number ot men engaged in a similar
straggle, while still further back in the
workings there was a larger number of
whom they know nothing. It la the
opinion of the mine official! and others
familiar with mining that these men
had not penetrated tho mine as far as
had the majority ot the day shift, when
the explosion occurred, and that' tbey
headed for and reached tho main en
trance before the heavy cave-In that
now blockades the entrance not mora
than a' few hundred feet from the entrance.
Say New Lumber Rate Is Not Exces
sive as Is Charged
Washington, Deo. fl. Tho Inter
state Comniorco commission tcday re
ceived tho ananers ot tho llnrrlman
roads, tho Astoria A Columbia River
and tho llellingtmm liny A Itritlsh Co
lumbia roads to the complaint recently
filed by tho lumbern.on ot Oregon and
Washington against the now rates on
lumber from the Pacltlc coast to inter
ior points.
The answers aro along similar lines.
Kach rood denies that there wns any
unlawful agreement In fixing tho now
rates, and as specifically denies that
there is any agreement letween tho
II III and llnrrlman systems under
which tho Northwest is parceled out,
Mr. 1(111 to control Washington and
Mr. Ilarrlman Oregon.
In defense ol thn recent Increase,
they allege that tho old lumber rate
was extremely low and non-compensa
tory, made at a tlmo when the Pacific
Northwest was undeveloped and lum
herinen needed a low rate in order to
reach out into competitive territory.
Sinco then, they allege, tho lumber
business has assumed enormous propor
tions, yielding a handsome income to
thoso engaged in it, and the cost ot
transportation has correspondingly In
created, rendering it necessary for rail
roads to get a higher rate for handling
lumber.
