He was buried in the aftcn'ddn. The decided has lived in Crobk county for n number of years. He was an engineer by trade and formerly worked for the Deschutes Lumber Company at Hcnd. Journal. Acting under instructions from District Attorney Mcncfcc, Sheriff F.lkins has served notice on the sa loons at Prittcville that no more gambling will bo allowed. U. church was held in llcnd this week. On account of the illness of Presiding Kldcr Skipworlh, Rev. L. N. H. Anderson of Arlington was here to conduct the conference, and preached two very helpful ser mons Monday aild Tuesday even ings. He was accompanied by Rev. J. K. Crnlg of Madras. Last spring J. it. Oncill planted one potato about the size of u hen's egg, in n lull tilone. The other day he dug out of that one hill .19 fuic otatocs which weighed 19 pounds. That's n fair example of what the Ucud country is good for. Who can beat it? The potato planted is known ns the Hcnd variety and was "discovered" by Mr. Oncill. Mrs. J. J. Hogatt, who has been visiting lu Hcnd with her sister, Mrs. Hugh O'Kanc, left for Port laud last Sunday accompanied by Mrs. O'Kanc. He has secured the use of McNcilly's brick-making machine at I'riuevillc nnd will move the machine onto his hotrtestcad where there is a valuable deposit of brick clay. A. II. Kstcbcnet is having a new building erected on the rear of his lots on Oregon St. It will be 30x31 feet with a 34-foot front. It will have a rustic front similar to that of the Mutig building now occupied by A. L. Hunter with hli harness nnd saddlery shop. The new buildiug will be occupied by Jns. McHlrOy, who will move his blacksmith shop therein. O. II. Long of Ucdniotul is building the strttctnrc. A. M. Drake left last Monday forPottland where he will join Mrs. Drake iu a short visit with Port laud friends. Later they will go to Little Falls, Mititl., and visit at the home of n brother of Mrs. Drake. Mr. and Mrs. Drake were quite undecided as to their future movements but they were planning somewhat on spending the winter abroad probably in southern France. It is possible they may be back to Hcnd next summer although noth ing positivcTCgarding this has yet been decided. There has been more or less dis cussion In Hcnd as to whether or not Miss Mac J&ecd could bold her homestead inasmuch as she was ab sent therefrom, acting as deputy clerk in Princvillc. When Inspec tor MeycndbriT was here a few weeks ago he looked Into this mat ter and made liis report to the land office officials.
