Ilnrcn Grant celebrated his birth
day yesterday by tendering a party
to a number of his little friends.
J. I'. Kimball, head cruiser and
confidential agent of the Wcycr
hatiscr Co,, the larges't owners -and
purchasers of timber lauds in the
United States, arrived in town last
Saturday and will make his head
mmrtcrs here the balance of the
year. Silver Lake Leader.
A number of tftntleriian and lady
friends of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph
Sheldon treated them to a surprise
yesterday afternoon, being in the,!
nature of a farewell party at Mr.
nnd Mro. Sheldon leave in a few
lays for the valley. The ladies
served refreshment. Kvcryonc re
ports a flue time.
The first issue of the Silver Lake
Leader reached our .exchange table
last week. It was well filled with
local news and carried n goodly
amount of advertising. There may
be room for two papers at Silver
Lake but we have our doubts. This
habit some people have of rushing
into a field and starting a new pa
per before there is business to war
rant the move thus splitting up
the patronage so that neither makes
much, if anything should be dis
couraged. The Leader and the
Central Orcgouiati may both make
enough to pay their bills and return
a fair profit on the investment, but
again we have our doubts.
The city council last Wednesday
evening granted a new license to
A. II. Kstcbchct to date from today.
Aug. 33. The old license was can
celled in all respects and he was re
quired to take olit a acw enc and
pay the full license fee. The sum
forfeited on his old license was close
to f 100. An ordinance was also
passed by the council 'prohibiting
the running at lare within the city
limits of stock or fowls. Suitable
penalties arc provided for those who
violate this ordinance. The ordi
nance appears in fulj hi anothct
column. You had better read it.
This measure has long been badly
needed and should be strictly en
forced. Portland Bank Falls.
