War Will Then Uo Begun on the Sate Rat. While the sage rat does not infest the Bend country, it is q- c a nui sance surrounding Madras. Speak ing of a plan to inoculate these pests with a deadly disease, the Madras Pioneer says: In a recent letter to the editor of this paper, Mr. S. E. Piper, who lias charge of the niological Survey of the Department of Agriculture and is conducting experiments at Pullman, Washington, states that he does not expect to be able to conduct field tests with the inocu' lation of sage rats in this locality, during the present season, but if possible he expects to visit this sec tion soon, to acquaint himself with conditions, with a view to begin ning the field tests here early next season. Some time ago a box of sage rats was scut to Mr. Piper for experi mental purposes, the experiments being conducted at the experiment station at Pullman. These tests have so far proved highly satisfac tory, and Mr. Piper is conGdent that the sage rat pest will be entire ly eradicted by this process. The present experiments are being con ducted on caged rats, the rats be ing inoculated with a virus which produces a deadly coutageous de sease, and the results being careful ly studied with a view to ascertain- ing not only theeiTectupon the rats, but the possible danger of conta. ion to other animals. Later field tests will be made, the rats to be inocu lated and turned loose. Mr. Piper has requested a new shipment of the sage rats from this locality, in order to continue the experiments at Pullman, and more rats will be gathered at once, if possible, and shipped to him. As 030 M the experitsests with this lot arc conplctcd) he expects to vJjU tM Mctloo it) pcrwBj to stud the conditions so that the field tests can be taken up here early next sea son. "Stainless Flag" Sunday. Sunday, June 30, has been desig nated "Stainless Plag" Sunday by the Anti-Saloon League of America. On that day about two hundred ministers in the state of Oregon will speak on some phase of the drink evil and distribute to their congre gations twenty thousand copies of Dr. E. S. Chapman's "Stainless Flag" address, which are to be furnished free by the Oregon State League. This is a movement of wonderful possibilities and uo doubt, public sentiment on the drink question will be lifted to a higher level thereby. Creamery at i'rlnevllle. It is now practically assured that Prineville will have a creamery. Of the $3,100 required to install the plant $2,500 has been subscribed and the balance will undoubtedly soon be taken up. A creamery is a valuable thing for a community and Ptineville is to be congratulated on securing &uch an industry. Read The Bulletin's Irrigation Department. Tlrablr L!i!, Act June J. it;f.
