gations, aggregating abont 100,000
acres. The new contract, briefly
summarized, requires the reclama
tion system to be completed in four
years from date. The amount of
the lien on unsold laud is increased
from $10 to $35 an acre, on n'i
average, but the annual wa' r
charge is reduced from $1 80
cents an acre. The contract pro
vides tliat at tue expiration ot 10
years from date the compmy must
turn the system to a y c uMrs'
associatfou if one should ue organ
ized and demand such action.
Hereafter the reclamation work
is to be done bv districts and when
ever any district has Imcii supplied
with water the state laud board will
apply to the government for a pat
ent and then throw the laud open
to settlers. No sales can be made
until the board has given authority
Settlers are required to cultivate at
least one-eighth of their land with
in three years niter purchase. The
quantity of water to be furnished it
1.8 acre-feet during the irrigation
heasou of 90 days. This means
sufficient water to cover the land to
a depth of 1.8 feet.
Sales that have been made here
tofore are in no way affected by the
newcontract with the Deschutes
Irrigation & Power company though

make an additional payment if they
desire and come under the uevv reg
ulations. The new contract was
drawn by the Attorney-General
and state engineer under instruc
tions from the state laud board.

At a meeting of the Bend school
board Thursday afternoon the fol
lowing teachers were elected for the
vear 1907081 Principal, Miss
Ruth Reld, at a salary of $90 per
mouth; inttrmediate grades, Misses
MurkiH Wicst and t Maude Vaude
vert, $60 nsd. $30 per mouth re
spectively; primary, Miss Nellie
lames, J60 jer month. Mrs. V. V
Smith, who taught the primar
grade last year, was not an appli
cant for re-election Miss Cora
Ferguson was elected teacher for
the Arnold school provided she will
accept the position at S50 per mouth
The board also decided to equip
one of the up-xtair rooms for use
and to install sanitary appliances
throughout the building During
the coming year four teachers will
be employed in the town schools,
instead of three as heretofore.
Iteml's school system is expanding
and will keep fully in line with the
growing needs of this section. J
